The cable is a "custom" programming cable and is, typically, USB related in some way. I have a programmer cable for my Yaesu FT-60R HAM radio. The CD disk that comes with the cables is NOT the programming software, but instead the drivers. You have to download the CHiRP software.

Btw, SOME TIMES, you are running a GREAT RISK of "bricking" your radio when using software to go "outside" of its intended operationg range. I know this from experience when a guy I knew was doing this to his HAM radio. BUT, that was quite a few years back, so I would THINK something like that is pretty rare??? Just know and understand that that IS a possibility because it HAS happened!!!

CB, in my humble opinion is the better way to go when offroading for short distant comms! The shortest antenna I would go on a trail would be a 4ft whip. Any shorter and you start sacrificing "distance" even IF the antenna is tuned to its most efficient resonant frequency!!! Honestly, HAM radios, especially the handhelds, you are going to get ABOUT as much "reach" for comms compared to CB. NOW, if you were to get a mobile HAM that has 10W, 25W, etc output power then you will EASILY get quite a few miles OUT!!! So, it all depends on how much you are willing to spend?

In the end, it's actually pretty retarded to have a HAM and not a license to go with it for reasons just said above!!! With a HAM license, you now have the ability to connect to repeaters and go possibly a hundred plus miles depending on how you are setting up your setup and what repeater you are connecting to!!! Even with a repeater however, landscape/structures can still hinder you from reaching out to anyone. Just how it is!!! Quite a few factors to take into consideration!

If all you are going to do is use it for trails, get the 5W deals. The 8W are much better because of that extra 3W, does make a difference, BUT battery usage is significantly cut down as well because that 8W is just sucking the dear life out of those batteries, LMAO!!!

Also the part left out that @RynoDyno may want to know, technically you're supposed to have a license for a ham. But there's no way for them to track the ham to use.... although always that 1% chance

Also, since on the subject of batteries, the smart thing to do would be to get an extra battery pack for a "HOT SWAP". Remove the expended battery, pop in the fresh charged pack, and continue TX'ing.

They do have batt packs that are actually battery operated for emergency purposes!!! I would look into those as well?! But then again, I'm into radios and would spend $$$ on such things where most people won't see to much cost benefit! :notsure:

That's the one I got. Great radio. Worth the money. Mine even cam unlocked. No programming required. Don't think everyone is that lucky though
This one comes with a bumch of accessories. If you're worried about price try to find a lone GT3 without them
Read above posts. As far as antenna it depends. Handhelds don't need then, built in ones do
No lol. You want a channel with less traffic. Think of it as a CB channel with more numbers. If there's a whole bunch of randoms on channel 15 are you still going to use it?
Yeah and then it didnmt work
In emergency ham is definitely better

Even much lower than 1%, but I am NOT willing to lose my HAM license either way. I just can't afford to do that!!! All I can do is tell you guys, but I'm not gonna STOP you, of course! Besides, I'm not being paid to police anyways, LMAO!!!

Not true bro. Hams have a little code that they transmit kind of like an IP address. If they tracked a group of us down they could tell who is who. Right @WileECoyote

Actually, yes they do!!! LOL!!! BUT, they still have to be able to find you though!!! If you are a moving target, it gets pretty hard to do. I would LOVE to learn how to "fox hunt", LMAO!!!

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
    Yup. Both.
CB is the radio equivalent of cups n' string compared to HAM. Carry both.
I also went the other way. Hard mounted CB and handheld HAM. I can show you my setup on Saturday if you'd like. I'm working to "convert" my HAM into a semi-hard mount. Run an antenna to the space and leave the coax hanging when the radio isn't in place. Basically using a handheld by screwing it to an external antenna, using a 12v adapter for power, and using an external speaker/mic mix (like Randy tagged above from Amazon) for usage.
I love long ass antennas... I have a 5' er Firestik II (longest they have) it's a bit of a cow when going into a parking garage but how often does that actually happen?
I have a 12v adapter for mine, I really should carry a battery as well just in case...
    So CB?
