It is necessary for people who want performance right out of the box, without needing to modify. A lot of people don't want to wrench on their car, but want something better than bone stock. That's why the Raptor sells well. It has good specs and looks badass, and the buyer doesn't need to change a thing for that.

I'm not an off-roader (maybe will leave the pavement 2-3 times a year).. But I would seriously consider a Pro if it was available in Inferno and easier to come by at a local dealership.

Why? Because I like the look. If it irritates any serious "off-roaders", shame on them for caring how others are spending their own money. That's something I'll never understand..

It has front and rear on-command lockers and they finally replaced those crap 'kevlar' tires with a real off-road tire... because it's not the SR5, not even the TRD Off-Road edition, but the PRO TRD Off-Road edition... right? Toyota needs to take a day trip over the Jeep, see what actual offroad upgrades look like.

On the other side of the equation, yes, if I had the $$$ I would buy one. How many Porsche base caymen and 911 owners are truly maxing their car's abilities out, to justify upgrading to those cars higher performance level models like the S/RS?

    Pretty arbitrary argument here

Why spend $70k on a new vette when you can buy a used car (any car) that puts down 800 to the wheels for half the price?

    Because that's what they want

I think it is a cool truck. I can see why people would want to buy them. It doesn't make sense for me with my commute, to pound miles on the thing. Plus, I can get my '14 SR5 to do any offroading that I do (which is pretty mild). I think it is good that Toyota offers the Pro models, but at the same time it isn't necessary. I suppose if I didn't have a long commute and wasn't going to rack up a ton of miles, I would spend the money on one.

This could be said for a nicely equipped, stock SR5, and for sure with either TRD offering.

If you're going to do serious offloading you want to build your own. But if you want something off road capable for your daily driver you don't want to make a bunch of mods that end up ruining your mileage. And you might want the leather seats and home link and stuff like that.

I decided to go with the pro over the TRDOR because:
premium tech package with no sun roof
    home link
really like the looks of the cement (saw it at the Chicago auto show)
    more practical skid plate

The other stuff I liked and they didn't add anything I didn't like.

Fortunately for Toyota and every other automaker, people are willing to pay thousands more for small cosmetic changes and small suspension changes.

if my goal is Moldor I wouldn't even start with a Toyota. Seriously IFS for rock crawling, give me a break. However, I'd seriously consider a Pro for how I use my truck. I NEED a dead reliable daily driver and I WANT a capable off-road, back road truck.

And WTF people, what business is of yours how other people spend their money? o_O Judgemental maybe?

I have a delivery position on a 17 TRD Pro and am a former owner of a 06 TRDOR. It seemed fitting to chime in, and subsequently take some lashings. I'm a newb on TW, so be gentle.

A little background: I commute daily ~30 miles round-trip. Live in Houston where the largest hill to climb is an on-ramp. Former Coloradoan, dying a little every day here in the concrete jungle, but still love Texas and the ever present patriotism and southern hospitality. I carry, and respect LEO's and the Military in every respect, and have an EDC bag in the car. I work too much to tinker, and prefer to ride out the warranty before carving into the trim, or welding to the frame, or drilling holes to bolt in winches, compressors, etc...

I am still on the fence but leaning to the TRD Pro because I am an avid outdoors-man, looking for an overland rig requiring little to no additional equipment to be ready to hit the trails, or beaches, or mud (rains a sh!t ton in HOU). Having had a 2nd Gen TRDOR and putting it through its paces in Colorado high country in bone stock form, I learned that a couple little things would have saved me from some costly bumps and bruises. 1" lift over stock is not much, but helps. A 1/4" skid plate saves you from that errant rock, or log, or garden gnome. Leather is a plus and the dog hair doesn't get woven into it like an Irish wool sweater. FOX suspension is "sexy" but meh, and the TRD exhaust is nothing but fluff. All that having been said, I can still drive off the lot with a very capable rig, a little bit of street flash, and for only a few extra bucks a month over a comparable Limited or OR. (I hope!?!)

What I know.....There are no trips to Mordor in my near future, and if I ever had to escape from the invasion of the trunk monkeys, it will be in a Tacoma of some sort! Maybe the PRO isn't necessary, but it will sell at or above MSRP until the well runs dry, and perhaps we can all agree Toyota is doing something right in creating a buzz around it. It's not hurting TRDOR sales either.

    all tore up already
2 reasons to go with the pro:
-resale. never get what you put into custom stuff. if it was how everyone wanted it, the factory would build it that way and thats what they did with the pro. dont expect a dealer to give you another 5k for your taco because you put kings and method wheels on.
-warranty: not an issue at all dealers, but some are ridiculous when it comes to warranty claims and some people buy into it too much and this fear alone will keep many people from modding their trucks until their warranty expires

I bought a 2015 pro and I love it. It's like the sport and the offroad wrapped into one plus some extra goodies on top of that. I really like the asthetics of the sport model with the painted to match grille and bumper, the hood scoop... and of course the inferno color!

Just remember opinions are like !%* holes everybody has one! What difference does it make if someone wants something whether they need it or not, if you are not paying for it. Example I would almost bet most have gone out and bought the latest smart phones, tablets, i-pads, xbox as soon as new ones come out just to up grade and be able to tell their friends they have the newest. If you have, ask yourself why? I bought a new Tacoma TRD OR 4x4 truck but did not really need it at 64 yrs old, but still have flip phone! Go figure!
