I haven't seen much in the way of folks with short beds sleeping set ups, probably because the smart truck owners get a long bed...I got my truck a few years before I really started truck camping so have to make due with sleeping with the tailgate open. I borrowed much of this from other sources and adapted to a short bed.

Let me know your thoughts or show me what you've done with your short bed!pic 1.jpg pic 2.jpg pic 3.jpg pic 4.jpg pic 5.jpg

What are you going to do to cover the back?

I just picked up the rhino rack foxwing awning which will cover the back and side. If I'm solo and its really bad out, I can crawl in the back and sleep diagonally without much issue. The main platform also fits below the rails on the bed so I can have more headroom when I want.

Just leave it open, I would imagine.

    Looks good, OP!

Put a piano hinge in there so you can flip up the rear of the platform and close the tailgate. Then buy an inexpensive short bed truck tent something like this.

don't want to have to set up a tent everytime but I appreciate the feedback. What I'm painfully realizing now is that I don't have the headroom I need with the current set up. So while I hate to start over, it may happen to bring the platform closer to the wheel well...

Hey I have been meaning to reply to you for a few days now. Check out this thread, I built this exact set-up and it's great. Sits right at wheel well, and you have room to slide Rubbermaid bins underneath. I also cut myself a tailgate platform piece as well, but haven't made a slick-permanent solution yet. I make it feel cozy by adding a tarp off the back. It's also a 30-second job to uninstall/reinstall.

And I also agree with you that setting up a tent in your bed is not the way to go.

That's how it's done. The higher top camper is the way to go. Love mine.

Here's my low tech setup. I'm 5'10" and sleep with my knees bent a little and I sleep fine in my SB. Close everything up at night and open a sliding window and I'm good to go!

I'll only use this set up for a night or two, any more than that and a tent comes along. I tried a simple platform, but with all of the different types of activities I like to do, I found it a pain to be continually inserting & removing it.
