2016 Tacoma Rear Diff Gasket Leak

I was under the truck examining some things and noticed the rear diff gasket is leaking. I just took the truck in the 5k service 2 weeks ago and no mention of gasket leak. There is no way normal driving conditions for the past 2 weeks would have caused the leak so I'm think Toyota missed it or negated to tell me. I did install the diff breather to the bed compartments 3 months ago but don't see how that would affecting the diff to leak. Maybe the breather holds a slight vacuum to prevent the leak? Still would be a shitty gasket if so.

Has any one had this issue on the new tacomas?

 

Sure it's coming from the gasket and not the pinion seal?

Either way, remove the breather (to avoid a potential, unneeded headache) and take it in.

Ok if it is discontinuous like that and on the sides, probably the gasket. If it is soaked on the bottom and possibly sides, it could be running back from a faulty pinion seal.

Others have had gasket issues, a run of them must have been bad.

 

Check the torque on the bolts.. anyone??

 

Another idea that came to mind some how the breather mod I installed got plugged up causing over pressure which I highly doubt but i'll remove it and see if I can blow threw it.

Do you know the torque spec of those bolts?

Looks like possibly my fault.. the clear tube was bending when driving causing a pinch. Breather was clean so I fixed it with a few more ties and eliminated any possible pinch point from suspension movement or wind drag.

 

There is a TSB about leaking rear differential. Not sure what the TSB said the cause was.

 

Maybe I'll swing by and see what Toyota says.

 

Correct. A few of the nuts on the 3rd member were a little loose. Tightened them up and it's been trouble free since.

 

I found a spec that says 18 ft lbs but it was labeled for 2nd gen w/ elocker. @JerryTaco you remember the torque ft lbs you used?
