Nice! I have what may be a dumb question. I know nothing of macro lens but I love macro shots. Is there such thing as a 'dedicated' macro lens? And if so, is it a zoom that is capable of zooming in real close to the subject or is there cropping involve during post processing?

I've always been fascinated with macro shots, especially with all the details the camera & lens is able to capture.

Yes, there are dedicated macro lens. I would say most macro photography is done with a lens specifically designed for it.

I used a Nikon 105mm f2.5 macro lens. It has a fixed focal length, meaning there is no zooming capability. If you want to zoom, you have to move the camera closer or further away. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/424744-USA/Nikon_2160_105mm_f_2_8G_ED_IF_AF_S.html
    Nikon_2160_105mm_f_2_8G_ED_IF_AF_S_1276697904000_424744.jpg

Depth of field is really what makes macro photography unique. And the ability that lens can shoot in a 1:1 ratio, meaning that objects appear in their real size in the lens. I have always loved macro photography, but there is not a huge market for it in the real world and I really only use the lens for fun. It can be used as a decent portrait lens, but I would still rather use a lens that can zoom for portraits so I am not constantly walking back and forth.

Thank you for the response :) Looks like I have 6 dedicated macro lens to choose from on the Canon side for when the time comes.

Those are wild elk that were just chillin by the road. I live in Oregon, we get to see wild elk herds quite often.

I'm with ya buddy ;) I've seen wild elks before but not on the side of the road like that. Usually out in the game area when I'm hunting. What part are you from? I'm over at Beaverton.

Finally got around to getting my video tripod head. This thing is so nice. Fluid Drag System with perfect control over stable movement. Now if it would just cool off a bit so I could actually get out and get some footage.

What's money when it comes to buying a nice lens?

But seriously.... I haven't bought a new lens in about 7 years. At one point, nothing could stop me from the next photo purchase but that was a while ago.

Just got back from a trip to Mojave National Preserve and Joshua Tree - man it was hot. Totally worth it nonetheless :) Went with my buddy from Germany. He'll never feel hot back there again.

Up at the top of a dirt road in Mojave.

I've bought from keh.com and adorama.com, they are reputable. 47th street camera in NYC is to be avoided.

    B&H is good too.

I'm switching to digikam (digikam.org I believe) as apple has abandoned aperture.

I like my 55mm micro nikkor from the film days. Auto focus is not real useful for macro in my opinion. It does aperture preferred on my D7000 (won't meter on the D3000/D5000). On a DX body it's equivalent to a 82mm on full frame.

I live in the Roseburg area. Those elk were on the side highway 42 headed towards the coast a little bit before Myrtle Point. Was a perfect foggy morning, so I stopped for a few pics.
