Hi there, first time posting [IMG]
I'm looking to purchase either or vehicle and i'm looking for an opinions on which you would choose and why. I prefer the look of the 2015 but the allure of a smaller/stronger fuel efficient? engine draws me to the 2016 but there might be possible bugs/issues that still have arisen yet
Any thought/opinions will be appreciated...looking at 1-2 yr old used in the 20,000km range
    Located in Toronto, Canada
    Thanks [IMG]

    Welcome to TW!

The 3.5 has more top end HP in stock form, but the 4.0 is a proven platform that has more low end torque. If you want stronger, adding the supercharger to the 4.0 and have way more HP and torque than the 3.5. I bought a 2015 because I wanted to supercharge it with the factory supercharger, and the program was discontinued and not developed for the 3.5.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
@crashnburn80 Magnus is the manufacturer of the TRD Supercharger for the 4.0L. I don' think they've released it, yet, but it should be out soon just without the "TRD" name on it. Performance is the same.

I'm aware. The 4.0 Tacoma kit was released, with a nice price hike.

It seems unlikely they will develop a supercharger for the atkinson 3.5. Especially with Toyota cancelling the program.

Price hike? Isn't that what a TRD used to cost??

They raised it by about $1300 over list. But you used to be able to get it for even less from places like trdpartsforu. I ended up paying $4300 for mine.

OP I would drive both and see what you like best. I personally like the 2015 body better, but the 2016 interior better. The 4.0 1GR-FE is a true truck engine used in the land cruiser with legendary durability, which I found appealing for an off road truck. The 5 speed auto in the 2nd gen is also a good reliable unit and people don't complain about how it shifts.

Drive both by yourself back-to-back, same day. There is really no better way to find out.

Do you need to know, or care?
Test drive both, and not just around the block. Take it onto the highway, drive it up a couple hills (yes, there are a few in TO), do light acceleration and hard acceleration. Just drive it! Then go over everything with a fine tooth comb, checking out all accessories, storage, etc everything you might care about. Next is price, can you afford the one you decide on? If not, keep looking, don't go too deep into debt if you don't have the cash. Are you planning on racing it? If no, then don't worry about Superchargers.

IMOP, both are solid trucks, I owned a '13 Gen2 and it 100% served me well.

It's a matter of opinion, Gen2 owners will tell you to by that and Gen3 will tell you to buy there's. Buy what's right for you, don't listen to all the doomsayers from both Gens.

Good luck! But most of all enjoy the new ride when you get it.

I've had both. Hands down third gen is better. 22mpg (us gallon ) mixed driving. vs 18.5 in my gen 2. Smoother and more refined. People moan about torque and hp.

Fact is if i want to tow my trailer i take my duramax. If i want to go fast I take out my 911.

The tacoma is a swiss army knife of the automotive world. Its not the best at any one thing but really good at a lot of things.

they are two different trucks in behaviour. This thread almost make me want to ....trade down maybe a 2015 trd pro then get the supercharger kit.

Very sorry to bring this out of the crypt but damn that's hilarious.. This guy/girl is trying to decide between 2 trucks, most likely because he/she can't afford a $60k truck and a $100k car alongside it. It's cool that you have those options for vehicles, but shit dude 99% of the people here don't live that life.. Sorry again for bumping this.. That irritated the hell out of me.

For the person who doesn't also own a 911 and a Duramax so must slum it with one vehicle the question remains. Sounds like to me if your needs are more car than truck that a 3.5L 3rd gen probably will make you happy but if do more towing or off road that a 4.0L 2nd gen might be better suited?
