I took my 2016 Tacoma built 5/16 A/T in for 5000 mile free service today and had them check tran oil level. Which was not low. I asked them to update the computer with the July 14 /16 revised software to address any tranmission issues. They called and told me during the upload my main computer fried. I was extremely mad !!!! Has anyone had this update done on the computer. Just wondering if the newly revised update software for the computer is faulty?

Mine was just done this weekend. Does your truck have a factory tow package?

Why mad? Aren't they fixing it? Aren't they putting you in a loaner? Isn't that why you bought new, to have the benefit of a warranty?

BTW, how does tested software 'fry' hardware?

It happens. Sometimes apple software updates brick iPhones. Usually it's something that someone does that causes the issues though. Like rebooting the ecu during the update.

I agree, it was most likely the tech person preforming the task. Their overnighting a new computer out of Boston to Auburn CA. So, hopefully resolved by tomorrow afternoon. I opened a case file with Toyota Factory just as a record if needed.

If not, my apologies and good luck with your truck. I'm sure they'll get you squared away.

Golden technical rule: Never ever update the firmware on any device out of warranty

While in warranty I would take full advantage of updates. After that, I would be extremely wary of making any changes.

While I doubt it "fried" the PCM, if power was interrupted during the flash, it's very likely to be unrecoverable.

The only thing that gets me is in the actual TSB, there's precautions they are supposed to take prior to flashing to ensure power won't get lost, but obviously everything is situational, and no two techs are created equal.

That being said, hopefully they have a quick turn around in replacing the component, and getting it back on the road with the updated firmware.

..."revised software to address any tranmission issues" You don't state IF you were having any issues, where you?
If not why let them fool with it? The more someone messes with you stuff, the more of a chance they'll fook something up.
In other words...If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

    Bout time dude! lmaoo!

Ok, that makes sense, It could have been that the tech made a mistake somehow, I can't imagine or say how but if it can somehow happen, it will happen!

Edit: Or most likely, the ECM was on its way out

    Cheers!

Service manage called me Tues morning ...He conveyed the reason for the glitch in the enhancement upload......Their main IT guy hadn't updated the tech's computers used for this upgrade. His said wrong numbers were entered. In addition, I spoke with another Toyota Dealership that had done several enhancement updates without any issues......Late afternoon the dealership called back and said the enhancement was completeled successfully. So, Truck is updated/fixed and Dealership told me the truth about their mistake!!

Wow the dealership is owning up which is huge. It sounds like your truck is going to be back in service.
Also thanks for coming back and updating your thread with the what happened. Before and after.
Yeah sometimes mistakes happen and yes it would make me mad too.
I think there are 3GENs that are trouble free and others not so much.
Post up some pics of your truck iif you get a chance and welcome to TW

Yeah, I am in IT and I hate firmware updates because if they go south, for whatever reason, they make take the whole associated system down. Not fun. But I had a question, how long did they take to check the tranny fluid level? Because when I took mine in, I had to bring it at the end of day and leave it there overnight so the truck is properly cooled down and they can check it. I got a call from them the next morning about 30 mins after they opened that it was low and it's good go now. Just wondering if they did actually check yours properly...
