I'm so sorry you are having all these issues. I would just ask for my $ back and get something else. You are absolutely correct that 3 bad tops in a row is not acceptable.

I have a tonneau cover that Toyota used on the 2016 TRD Sport 5 ft short bed. It is new, I removed from my truck three days after it was delivered. It is in my garage. I have all the hardware to install with the exception of side caps. The ones on the 2016 without the cover will work you must cut out a place in the plastic that cover the slots to install each bracket. The machine screw slots are located in the rails on your truck. I am asking $600 dollars. If you want to view pictures they are on the thread. I will have to locate if you are interested. I live in north Alabama.

I purchased the Leer Tri-Fold and love it. Quite a bit more than you want to spend, but very easy on and off and keeps contents secure with the tailgate locked. No noticeable difference in gas mileage.

Although Mythbusters was entertaining and I watched that episode, their "scientific method" very often left something to be desired. I feel their findings in this one were invalid because of too many variables (speed, acceleration, braking, one single truck bodystyle) to reach a valid conclusion.

Similarly, when I owned a '80's model Ford Ranger with a 4 cylinder and MT, it felt like I had another 10hp without the tailgate so I can't imagine it would get better mileage with it installed.

Fairly happy with Leer Trilogy trifold on Tacoma.

Mythbusters approach to the scientific method often leaves something to be desired. Thankfully there is some real science on the subject out there published by SAE and NRC as well as a few other places that back up their basic conclusions. Results vary somewhat based mostly on bed length but best results come from open bed with the tailgate up and/or a tonneau cover.

Yes the hinges are on the outside, so it is not flat. Doesn't bother me, I love the cover.

You may be right, it was awhile back since I watched the episode. It was tailgate up vs. tailgate down, not with a cover. It was quite an entertaining show, I am not an engineer or aerodynamicist so I wouldn't be able to know forsure. Thanks for the info though!

Can you still use the tiedowns in your factory rails after installing this cover?

I ended up calling Access to ask them this question and they are telling me that I will not be able to use the sliding tie down hooks in the factory rails of my 2017 Tacoma due to the angle of the rails on the Lorado, but that they will work with the Access Original. Can anyone confirm?

Okay - they told me they would work with the Original, the one you have and the Limited, but not the Lorado.
