so long the exhaust exit pass the last operating window its legal. However by law if its louder then OEM then it can fall into a gray area. to loud you can get a ticket for loud exhaust ticket

Check engine lights is not a safety inspection Item any inspector failing for a check engine light should be called out on it. demand them to call the city inspections office /AKA RECON their the same people who handle safety inspection over site as well.

hawaii doesnt have emissions so they dont check exhaust in hawaii but technically you cant remove a CAT per Federal law - another hawaii GRAY AREA

    Try asking this part again,
Any fellow members recommend a auto shop that is friendly for state safety inspection and/or a shop that can perform an alignment and provide a legal alignment within factory spec print out sheet for RECON? Got one or 2 shops but want to line up my options...

    thanks

what's your options? @hacklerjason refers to American Tire in Kapolei if you're near the area. Scotty's and Island Brake and Alignment are two options a lot of folks have used. I've used American Tire and Island with really good results.

Yea I send guys to either Kapolei or Mapunapuna american tire. Can do safeties but gotta be legal beagle.. For alignment they can get it where it will track well, steer well, and return to zero well, but might not be in spec for the vehicle. They will make a sheet that will get you through recon and give you another sheet with the real info

By legal I mean lighting, recon, tint, etc... Anything that can be seen in the photo needs to be legit and justified on recon paperwork. The only thing I've personally seen slide is my tpms. I'm not sure how other places would treat the situation but I didn't have tpms sensors in my aftermarket wheels and they told me some places look for them. They told me over the phone to just put my stock wheels in the bed and they would pass me. I eventually made a tpms bomb and that was way better

better have them recheck with DOT. TPMS isnt a inspected item and can not be a item for failure on inspections.

Actually sir, I think you better go recheck with DOT, which is federal, as in the FMVSS... Attached is a link for your review
    http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/rulings/tpmsfinalrule.6/tpmsfinalrule.6.html

Also attached for your review, is the hawaii state safety requirements manual dated in 2013
In this manual, at the middle of page 24, you will find a section called TIRES, and the first line states that "all tires used on public roads must conform to federal motor vehicle safety standards" ... That does not directly mention TPMS, but it does make mention of conformity to FMVSS which hawaii does follow... I can assure you that inspectors are supposed to be checking this and if they dont its because the interpretation of this exact manual leaves room for errors.

Unless you mean to tell me the FMVSS doesn't apply to you?

Just because the places you go to don't check, doesn't mean all places do the same poor inspection... I go to places where they do a proper inspection for state regulation as well as FMVSS... There lays the problem in itself.. I don't feel like spending another 400 for sensors in wheels I spent 1700 bucks on and wrapped in 1200 dollar rubbers.. These vehicles after 2007s phase in period are required to have them and the state is required to check for its presence and operation... Its up there with light colors and srs

If you have your tpms light on, I highly advise you NOT to go to my referred locations, you will be failed there... I would think it would be obvious a tire/alignment shop that also does safeties would check for these things... But apparently some people are uninformed...

John, I would also make an appointment in advanced. There is usually a long wait list anywhere you go.

Since youre a bad source of information I found it relevant to correct you once again... The check engine lamp is grounds for failure, due to the fact we do not have emissions testing here... You will be failed on safeties per Hawaii code if any systems trouble lamps are illuminated, ABS, SRS, CEL, MIL, SES, etc... Please check yourself before telling anyone to check themselves... People like you are the reason bad information goes around causing much confusion on what the rules actually are... Post facts only please unless you like being made to look like an ass... And if you do not and I'm in the thread, I will correct you, and I will cite actual references for the TRUTH

Please see page 28 of the Hawaii State Safety Inspection Manual
