The 2.7 will do anything you ever ask of it, as long as you never ask it to do 0-60 in under 9 seconds or to pass with alacrity on the highway.
For that, you will want the 4.0

Go ahead and test drive both 4 and 6 to make sure you don't make a mistake and will be happy with the choice.

Here's my 4 cylinder with go fast goodies installed and has more than enough hp to pass a 2016 Tacoma on the Cajon Pass @ 75 mph on the steepest section of this pass . I passed that new Tacoma like it was standing still and I know he heard the blower whine LOL!!

Oh by the way my Tacoma is a Double cab that's 14 yrs old and only 56k miles !!

I advise you get the 6. 4 cyl just not quite enough power for these size trucks. Gas mileage is horrible on them too.

on the 4.0 yes the fuel milage is horrible....Im one of the lucky ones who's 4.0 actually gets decent milage, but it still makes me shake my head at what it should be getting

It gets to 60 about 2 seconds faster, and for passing power on a back road it makes the 2.7 look like a real turtle. :notsure:
    The 40's not a v-8, but there's definitely a noticeable difference over the 2.7

You meant to say 6, right? I know engineers can't spell, but they usually get numbers right o_O

The answer to your comparative question is of course not. That assumes both vehicles have had similar reasonable mechanical care, AND that your uses for the truck preclude the need for a 6.

I love my 4, and was specifically shopping for one. No regrets here. But I don't use the truck like some others do. Bicycles, kayaks, boxes of stuff, building materials is about it. Does fine at legal speeds on the road, just allow a bit more time to merge or pass on two lane roads.

And while it's not car-like MPG, it's notably better than any 4.0. Easily stays in the 20s, even w/AC on.

V6 and 4x4, just do and don't look back. I would never buy a 4cyl truck and I would never buy a non 4x4 truck. Many, many people feel this way, you will hold much better resale with the V6 and 4 wheel drive.

Depends on what you're using it for, what you're used to driving, and how fast you want to go.

My 2015 has the 2.7 and I've had no trouble keeping up with traffic and it comfortably tows 1500lbs of boat and while getting 22mpg on the highway. It also feels quicker than my wife's Corolla and I have zero need/desire for a 12 second quarter mile or 7 second 0-60.

The ONLY time that I've ever regretted the 4cly is when my boss offered to let us borrow his speed boat for a weekend and I had to pass because the 4 wouldn't move 5000lbs of boat..........

Both engines are proven reliable and there are probably as many 10+ year old 4.0L Tacomas on the road as 2.7L's

Yes...but not as long of a track record as the 4 cylinder which has been in trucks since the 80's...which was my point. Both are reliable, but one just has a longer history...

I have a 2011 RC 4x4 with the 4 cyl 5 speed, no complaints at all. Yes I get about 20 mpg highway but speed limit is 75 mph, or when I'm loaded up for work I get about 17-18 mpg, but speed limit most of that drive is 80 mph. It does what exactly I need it to do, I don't regret getting the 4 cyl at all!
