Fuel filter built into fuel pump

Yep.... just finished installing an in-line. Cost less than $80 and 45 minutes.

Whats the point in adding an in line filter? You aren't going to make the pump last any longer. And the filter in the pump is already catching the contaminates.

 

Have you looked at this "filter"?

It is nowhere as good as an inline filter with a decent pleated filter element inside. Plus it will trap water if some makes its way into the tank.

 

I have 100k warranty. I'm not going to re engineer the truck. If something fails, they can eat it.

 

I dont see the gripes here. So many vehicles today run this setup. It isnt some all new prototype reinvention of the wheel. Outside of big trucks, i cant think of many vehicles made in the last 10 years using a servicable fuel filter. I do parts and probably sell a good dozen or so fuel pumps a week. Know it isnt an exact rule but trend seems to be metal tank=fuel filter. Plastic tank=fuel strainer on the pump assy. I have a rack of strainers for fuel pumps, but our store hasnt sold one yet this year.

Other than a gas station operating old out of spec tanks or someone intentionally sabotaging your vehicle, i dont see where an additional filter is needed

 

No such thing as leak proof tanks. There are only two kinds of underground tanks...tanks that are leaking, and tanks that are going to leak. They may have leak detection systems and may have anti-corrosion systems on them, but they are eventually going to leak. Actually most of them leak where the lines connect to the tank or where the lines reach the dispenser. But either way, being around modern tank systems won't prevent you from getting bad gas. Might make it less likely, but contaminated gas is usually due to crappy operators, and they can be anywhere.

 

This I know for sure; there's no way I'd be adding an aftermarket fuel filter and chance on voiding $14k+ worth of fuel system.
But to each their own if it will make someone feel better

You don't have 14K+ worth of fuel system on that truck. Not even on 10 trucks. You can buy everything, front to back for not much over $1000 if you want to replace it all. No way the fuel system is worth over 1/3 of the total value of the truck. You REALLY got robbed.

So you SERIOUSLY believe that the fuel delivery system comprises 1/3 of the TOTAL value of the truck?

Time to get serious.

You can buy the complete in-tank fuel pump / cartridge for about $200 bucks. Didn't take the time to look up the high-pressure pump, but it is much simpler, so probably in the same ball park. fuel lines are worth about a hundred bucks, tubing-wise. High pressure lines are too short to matter. So you must be spending $13,500 on those injectors. Bet I can find 'em cheaper. Certainly not the $1000+ per injector you seem to believe in.

In fact, I'd bet you can buy the COMPLETE 3.5 engine for less than $14,000.

Oh well, in that case go on ahead and void your warranty then, since it’s only $1k. worth of warranty, most ppl have that to spare in their back pocket! lolo!

Nobody is going to void their warranty by adding an inline fuel filter. Most would probably wait until the warranty has expired, when THEY become liable for the costs.

I wrote up some of this post while still earlier in the thread, so some of this already got answered, lol.

There is the pickup screen/sock/filter below the filter, and then there is an actual fuel filter mounted above the fuel pump before the hanger. It's in there, just as it has been since 2005 on the Tacoma and earlier on other Toyotas.

The fuel pressure in the lines on the 3rd gen is no higher than it is on most conventional EFI systems, about 40 - 60psi. The port injectors work at normal fuel pressures and the same fuel lines supply them as the high pressure pump which is actually mounted on the valve cover and mechanically pumped via the camshaft. After the high pressure pump, fuel pressures are in the 1800psi range, but all high pressure lines are mounted on the engine, none on the body.

The pump itself is available separately, 23221-31130.

There is a low pressure pump inside the tank, it is a similar type of pump that was in the

1100 bucks for the high-pressure pump? DFI has been around in big V6 outboards for years. Yamaha high pressure pumps are under $100 bucks. They run about 1/2 the pressure of the Toyota.

Most of those prices are simply obscene.

Once upon a time I owned a Mercury XR6 V6 outboard that sold brand new for about $9,000 in 1992. A friend and I (he worked at the marine dealer where I bought the motor) were waiting on the parts truck, and we decided to put together an XR6 from the parts catalog. We STOPPED at $50,000 and still had a ways to go. That's nonsense. IE $2500 for the lower unit which is a one speed forward one speed reverse transmission with no clutch. You can buy an 8 speed auto for that. Dealership parts prices are beyond ridiculous.

 

I have about 300k on a 2005 pump. So, I dunno why'd u f&ck with something that obviously works. Especially for the past 11 years

 

$6000 in parts alone. I never threw out the $14k number. I was simply responding to the "I can buy it all for $1000" statement

 

They also replaced the tank, the charcoal canister and all injectors.

Quite literally the entire fuel system was replaced. I have all the old parts if anyone's interested on seeing them lol

 

Insurance.

However, it was the entire system, the filler neck/tank, main charcoal canister and the other one on the filler next vent tube, all lines, vacuum and fuel, 12 injectors, fuel rails, gaskets, o rings, etc. Literally the entire system.

Truck had 5200 miles on it. It needed fixed .
