My work week has been pretty uneventful, but I haven't had a day off in 12 days.

Is it typical for an 8 y/o truck to be low on refrigerant? I don't use it often, so I don't want to spend much cash on it, but at the same time, I don't want to spend cash for a recharge if it has a leak somewhere.

Yea I got the Firestik coax cable with the ring shaped end.

Installed the CB system, Speaker and PA Speaker, got it all wired up. Used the driverside seat hole with some RTV to seal it. This truck is 100x easier to snake stuff through the firewall compared to my Evo or WRX... Went through the hole that the Hood Release Cable goes through. I wired up the CB directly to the battery because I want to be able to listen/use it when the truck is off just in case. Didn't hook up the antenna, the mount I bought from a vendor on here wasn't dry before they wrapped it and shipped it so there was newspaper stuck to the bracket. In addition the outside corner of the mount looks like it would take an eye out so I'll take it to work, sand blast it and round the edge off then respray.

    Things I realized:
    - Might be time to get a power distribution block and better battery terminals, the OEM ones suck for adding taps...
    - I need better safety glasses, I had to stop for 20 minutes because I got a huge chunk of sand in my eye while working under it
    - I have to learn how to use this SWR meter.

Thanks for the tips on the driverseat grommet - worked like butter. I wound up with exactly 2 inches of slack to the radio.

I never put anything on my Tacoma's battery terminals. Just a tip, if you open the under hood fuse panel, there's a pin in there, that's raw power feeding from the battery, put your connections on there, it's a nice, clean way to attach to power.

I'll have to look in my truck and see if there's one for the 3G. I had a beautiful distribution panel on my last one. I probably won't have as many electronics on this one.

I'd say just buy the cheapie kit with the separate gauge and give it a shot yourself, it's easy.

Top of my skull the 1988 Chevy Celebrity I had was the oldest vehicle I remember that had the override. I tried the AC when I first bought it and no change so I figured the compressor was crap till a friend told me about that feature. My ex's mother's boyfriend was an HVAC worker so he checked it, 0psi. He put in some R12 and it ran like a champ for 4 yrs which is when I sold it.

I'll take a stab your Fire-o (intentional spelling haha) didn't use a serpentine belt. From what I recall my friend explained the override as being influenced by vehicles going to the serpentine, that way the belt didn't puke and take the alternator and steering pump out if your AC compressor broke. That plus saving the expense of a compressor.

Also.. I need a new driverside tail light. The screw mount snapped so its only held on by the lower screw and it wobbles around like crazy.

I am sure you probably already got answers but yes it is common. It is common for vehicles to be low when new from factory also. I used to see systems on PDI's (predelivery inspections) that were low. The factory would save $$ by stretching the freon out. Any system is going to be a little porous and overtime you will lose pressure

I wish my evo caught fire... the insurance claim would be lovely....

I just had to vacuum my truck's system and add new freon a few weeks ago. I have no idea when the last time it was done either. My evo never got recharged until last summer (2005-2015) - surprisingly its the only thing on that car that runs reliably.

I used to use fittings that were pre-soldered. You'd brush the wire with some flux, crimp the connection lightly to hold it in place and then turn the torch on it to melt the solder into the joint. Easy Peasy, super reliable, and wicked convenient for tight spaces. But now I can't find them for less than a buck apiece, and the hell with that. So I've switched to regular solid wire solder and a flux brush, which is more annoying and messier.

Only connections I've had fail are when I rip the lights off on something :anonymous:

And even then, it's usually the wire and not the connection that lets go
