Ok guys, I want to do a complete front and rear re-gear for my 2016 2.7. I currently have 255/85r16 tires w/ aluminum wheels brand new sitting in my garage, but I haven't ran them as my daily driver because I know the 2.7 won't handle it going up hill or even on the highway. Stock, the truck has 4.30 gears and it doesn't move much with the 245/75r16 tires lol. The new 6 speed is comparable to the manual 5 speed finally. I have a friend with a 2nd gen single cab and I drove his manual and my 6 speed feels about the same or maybe a tad better. ECT really makes it comparable. The older 4 speed auto completely sucked in the 2nd gen 2.7.

I've done some research and haven't seen a whole lot of members who have done re-gears on a 4cyl truck. I've seen one or two guys with 4.88 @TYetti w/5speed manual. What would be the ideal choice to have power, yet have the Rpm range decent for highway use? I do have the 6speed auto transmission keep in mind. So I'm guessing it may need 5.29 vs 4.88?

4.88 or 5.29 gears? I plan on always having 285 or 255 33 inch type tires on the road.

    Thanks guys

I'm not up on the new trucks but my dumb question is do you have the auto trans or manual? I've heard there are 6 speeds for both in the later years.

I have the 4spd auto trans, run 33's and have 5.29 gears. When I ran 32's, I had 4.88's. I suggest the same gearing if you have the auto. If manual, you could get away with 4.56's... depending on the terrain you will like the 4.88's.

    Good luck.

I live in eastern Kansas, we have a lot of hills. Other than eastern side, out west it's super flat.

Hey Curt how you figure out what ratio the rear differential is? Would ours be the same even tho mines a 5 speed?

4.30 for the auto, I think the 5 speed is 3.90

My truck came with 4.30's new as well. That ratio was horrible even with the OEM 265-70-16's. Hell, I never used the OD.

If you plan on running 33's from here on out, again, I suggest the 5.29's.
    I turn 2750 rpm's @ 70mph.

For the difference in the speedometer, I went with the Dakota Digital piece, awesome and quick to install.

I've actually read the article when he did the road trip to Alaska from Washington! Great read! His access cab is sweet! I think I may go 4.88 like he did. Still doing some research in the meantime. Thanks man!

The gear ratio you're looking for is 4.56 no one makes 5.29 for the post 1st gen tacoma. 4.88 will be too much for the auto you'll be screaming down the highway

What size tires and what gear ratio do you have?

With an auto trans, 32" tires and 4.88's, I was turning 2700rpm's @ 70mph. Perfect around town with OD off.

As for the gear ratio availability, aren't the new gen thirds 8.4's?

The auto has a lower final drive than the manual so with tiny tires and 4.88s it's just over geared unless he's making the jump to 35s..... 35s and 4.88s is the perfect combo Imo mine feel stock when I'm not loaded to the nines, I'm 2700ish rpm at 70 indicated

No worries, just curious how you come to these conclusions.

I currently have 5.29's and have had 4.88's, both with the same auto trans. The auto robs what little power there is from the 2.7 motor so you'll need the gearing to make up for it.

It's my understanding that either the manual trans or auto have the same 1:1 ratio in final drive so that wouldn't affect the rpm's, I could be wrong on that however.

    Good luck OP.

I have a 2014 Reg Cab 4x4, 2.7, Auto transmission. It is lifted and has 285/75-16s on it. I got 4.88 gears put in last Friday. In my truck, it's PERFECT! I'm turning 2500 RPMs at 70mph and about 2700 at 75mph. Not over-reving at all, IMO. I freakin' love it!
