hey everyone. I've almost got my 750 buck Tacoma road ready. Only thing I need now is a new compressor..... I think. I can turn the switch for ac on and I don't hear it clicking over. Wiring looks good. Are there any other models that will cross over the compressor. I found a 97 4Runner 6cyl compressor for sale on the craigslist for 50 bucks. Would it work on my 97 2.7 Tacoma

FYI - the computer will not engage the compressor clutch, unless the system is pressurized with sufficient refrigerant.

Yup. I found the problem, it's not the compressor. I jumped the compressor and it turned on. I figured since they rebuilt it they may not have charged it. I went to the charging port, and heard it sucking. Pulled on the hose/tube and it came out. Wtf. Freon was being sent directly into the cab of the truck. My question is, where does this hose go and what needs replacing? Heater core? The heat works. Also What color is freon? Green slimy oily

Yeah, those lines should attach to the evaporator. Never worked on one of those.
I'm thinking that line you pulled out had been cut by the previous owner inside the cab.

Don't know that color freon (R134) is. I do know that the system contains a lubricant for the compressor, but not certain if it is in the 'freon' or in the compressor itself, or both.

It's oil / lubricating oil to keep rings and such lubricated. I'm gonna drop the evaporater core and see about the lines

the green you are seeing is a "dye" that is put in with the oil and Freon to check for leaks with a uv light after charging with Freon or for future testing, that is your evaporator core that is broke. time to pull it.

It's gonna be that there is no core, or there is a core and the lines were cut. I assume since I'm going that far into it I might as well replace it even if it is just lines

You are going to have to pull the dash out to access the evaporator core. Not a terrible job, just time consuming. I pulled my dash out in a few hours.

I read online people got to it from under. Supposedly it's easier then the heater core.

Maybe it was the heater core it was thinking of.

Not yet. I'm putting off taking apart the dash. In theory I should get to the evaporater core and see if 1) it's there, 2) if it is, is it just the ac lines that come off the evap core 3) that far into it should I just replace the core and tubes. Right now my main concern is finding the replacement rubber shift boot. Right now it's a hole in the floor where the shifters come up and nothing but hot air comes in. No point in fixing the ac if it will be overpowered by the heat coming in

You're going to need an evap (my bet), expansion valve and accumulator at the least.

The system should be flushed, as you have no clue how long it's been open or what may have contaminated it.

Once the flush is done, the proper oil amount needs to be added.

Then button it up and put a vaccum on it. It should come down to about -29" pretty quick. Leave it connected over night. Same reading in the AM shows you have no leaks, and it's ready to charge.

    Good luck!

Overnight?! I did mine for about two hours and it didn't move. But a month later the ac stopped working. I thought maybe it was the valve core since it held vacuum

That's fine, probably longer than most shops let it sit.

Overnight obviously is not a 'rule'. It's just what I have done, because it's easy, and gives another level of piece of mind. I have my own vaccum, so it's not like it's costing me anything to wait.

I started doing that when I was doing conversions from R12 - R134a on a couple of oldies, and had had more of the system open to replace seals, etc. Paranoia and all that. :D

BTW, my vaccum pump is high class. Made from a water cooler compressor. Giggle if you must, but it was free, and it works great. A touch slower than a pro unit, but it will get the job done. I bet even @Jimmyh would find that interesting
