The tacoma got its reputation from being reliable. If you think the engines are shit... then you are a dumbass.

Problem with rear end reliability is my #1 concern. If they get that fixed it will be a major step forward

You can call me a dumbass. And I'll call the 4.0 a POS. Don't like it, too damn bad. Of course I'd be upset if I bought a truck with an anemic 2.7

Just get a manual in my opinion at least then you can tell that engine what you want no matter the situation. But i agree with todays fuel economy as the main premis of ANY vehicle its hard for the trucks to play catch up so thats why we get the eco boost, small diesels, eight speed tranies, aluminum framed, cylinder deactivation.

The 4.0 was a proven motor that you could at least put an SC on to make more power...nothing about it was a POS, I am thinking this motor the 3.5 will end up being a good one and who knows there may be some power adder options in the future that will make a lot of people happy.

Any truck without a decent amount of low-end torque isn't a truck, period. Whatever generation Tacoma you own, at the end of the day it is really a SUV with a bed. I like my Tacoma and it fits my needs well, as I'm sure is the case for most people on this forum, but facts are facts. One things is for sure...my next truck will not be a Tacoma if Toyota doesn't step up their game in a big way.

If you are talking about the motor I think the low end torque in a half ton truck days are winding down and wont return....except for the EB motors Ford has and the Dodge eco diesel. You can thank the nannies in Washington who know more about what we might need or might want than we do.I think the 3/4 ton and up trucks are safe for the time being but I suspect they are next in line for a neutering...

I agree, the idiots in DC have taken a lot of auto makers out of the truck market. As you touched on, Ford seems to be the only one with an approach that keeps their truck capable of doing 'truck stuff' with their Ecoboost engines. When Ford first went down that path I hoped their competition would follow their lead, to include Toyota and their 'GEN3' Tacoma.

Whatever the case, I really feel like Toyota has opted to punt on keeping the Tacoma modern and their plan moving forward is to profit all they can on the model's reputation. I'm far from impressed from the 'GEN3' Tacoma when I look at the various technologies out there today. Maybe they don't feel like playing the games coming out of DC?

I am curious to see what Toyota does with the Tundra.I suspect they will mimic the Tacoma in a way to obtain better mpg etc....if thats the case I will drive mine till its not economical to repair or jump over to a EB.I would love to see Toyota roll out a turbo version for both the Tacoma and the Tundra. But dont see that happening

That 4.0 in our 2016 4Runner will run circles around my new Tacoma.

It pulls 6800 lbs. Its just our mentality that we like torque instead of high rpm in todays technology.
Sort of like the guy that still likes to change his synthetic oil every 3 mo 3000 miles.

Yep, I plan to do the same...drive my '14 Tacoma for about five more years and then see where the upcoming Ford Ranger stands at that point. Hell, with Ford's new 10-speed transmission the F-150 could even be a contender if it gets paired with the 2.7L Ecoboost...a full-size truck that creeps up on 30 MPG and still has a decent amount of low-end torque.

I never understood why that 4.0 made it into the 4runner and the FJ but not the Tacoma...they were around 270 hp I think?

    LOL
I get 27mpg so I am perfectly happy with it.
That is like saying, why not opt for the tundra in your case?
The 2.7 is gutless, but I drive 60 miles for work and would much rather get the extra 8mpg. The tacoma v6 is gutless itself. Don't buy a truck to go fast, stupid. I have a camaro(making 850 horse) for that reason. Yeah your truck is pretty anemic now isn't it.

Really ? Not believing anything you post these days.
Its so biased its become ridiculous.

    http://www.caranddriver.com/toyota/4runner
"Available with just one powertrain—a 4.0-liter V-6 with 270 hp and 278 lb-ft mated to a five-speed automatic transmission—this beast is outdated and a little sluggish."

    http://autotk.com/0-60-times/toyota/4runner/
    0-60 7.3 secs 4runner
    http://autotk.com/0-60-times/toyota/tacoma/
    0-60 TRD sport 6.6secs

Wonder if that is with the 1800 more pounds the taco can haul than the 4runner being pulled? :)
