How is it possible that a person can say "by law" and include information that isn't from the actual book where said laws are?

If the ABS light is illuminated, they can't fail you since it's an add-on. I removed my ABS and the light was illuminated and passed safety.

I saw that in the old book worded exactly like that.. Its up there in the book now with tpms, a required safety feature... Per the FMVSS Standard 105, all vehicles produced after 1Mar1999 must be equipped with antilock brake system

Please click attached link and find the relevant info

That's the exact same manual that I sent to konaborne and it's the same one that's on the iPads for reference check. So you are 100% correct on everything stated about. Don't forget your windows needs to up and down and your horn needs to work too lol. Stop the flow of bad info.

A lot of speculation and interpretation going on here. My advice to OP is to speak directly to the licensed inspector that will be performing the PMVI. Some places are more strict than others but no one should be failing for TPMS light or check engine light being on.

Once again with speculation... TPMS IS REQUIRED PER FMVSS WHICH IS ALSO STATE RESPONSIBILTY TO ENFORCE... PLEASE READ ALL INFO ABOVE BEFORE OFFERING ADVISE. I HAVE ATTACHED FEDERAL AND STATE DOCUMENTS FOR ALL TO REVIEW... It should be assumed that because these items are published as required, that your systems should be working properly... If they aren't and you pass, hey good for you... But the evidence is clear on what the regulations are... No speculating needed

Welcome to the forums... But what I did is provide facts, not my opinion.. What you advised to ask for the inspectors OPINION, which is not required... The rules are the rules

Oh my bad, from your previous posts I assumed you were NOT an inspector and just referencing 3 year old public information. Please continue keeping our island roads safe!

I am not an inspector... But I am the service dept foreman where I work, I do run my service dept and I'm very familiar with the regulations... And the lax enforcement of them... I made reference to that 3 year old document, because it is still current. In the absence of newer documents, most recent prevails

Doc is still current and can be found on the iPad of the inspectors.

I'm sorry but regarding the ABS light being on, I found this:

    image.jpg

As far as TPMS, the rules concern just the tires themselves. TPMS sensors are a system on the vehicle and considered an add-on. I agree that PMVI inspectors are nothing if not inconsistent but I can't agree with what you're saying.

I don't need you to agree with me... I know what the rules are... But I'll explain it for you anyways... FMVSS is federal, and trumps state regs... If state doesn't have what federal does, federal supercedes... Also... The book that says "add-on" is way old.. Go read the federal one I attached, don't just look at it like you have been, actually read it... Then come back and tell me how you didn't find that in the book... I'll wait... Or must put you on the same list of guys spewing inaccurate info and warn the others about you as well

All of these "state" regs you're referring to as "optional" are in fact REQUIRED PER FMVSS... which means no matter what the state says, its required...

I don't feel the need to validate over and over again... If you wanna try your luck at inspection with those lights on, good for you... As for the information I pass out, I'm going to set these guys up for success... Im not going to tell a single soul they might pass if they try... I'm going to site true sources of actual information, and help them om the right path... You can try to pass anything you like, anywhere you like.. When they fail you, and they will, you may never come back and tell us what happened.. But deep inside yourself, you will always remember, and that's good enough for me... If you refuse my sound advise, which it sounds like you're doing, don't expect any more to come your way... Most importantly... When you fail... You won't win an argument with an inspector because you have a book that says "add-on"... You're gonna be missing the FMVSS book that says its REQUIRED... END OF RANT

Ok, the FMVSS links you provided show what kind of safety equipment manufacturers are required to have on vehicles sold in the US after certain years. State and local laws have the final say as to what is permitted on a vehicle and if it needs to be operational or not. An example of this would be how DOT approved aftermarket light housings, until recently, were not permitted in Hawaii. Also, you don't need to be condescending to someone who also is trying to help others navigate through the messed up safety check system we have here. I commend you for achieving the level of shop foreman, not a small accomplishment, but you have admitted to not being an inspector and as such should be mindful of the topics you choose to argue and whom you may be arguing with. I have disproved your previous statement using documents that you yourself have provided but you insist that I am wrong. I only wanted to correct your misinformation for the benefit of the OP.

Edit:Sorry I took so long to reply, I was (incorrectly) doing a couple safety checks..

Its weird that you say the final say goes to the state and locals, but yet made reference to DOT aftermarket headlights... DOT is federal... The state has the responsibility to uphold federal regs... But do as you wish... And i will not stand corrected. I will continue to set people up to pass state and federal inspections should the requests arise. You inspect vehicles however you see fit, its your license to do so
