I'd wait for 2017 or even 2018 at this point based on my experience. It's a beautiful truck and I love the new smell but then after 6 months of ownership, sweat and farts..... the new smell wears off and I'm stuck with a payment and several issues that Toyota just can't seem to get right. Consider we also own a 2016 4 runner that was built in Japan and is absolutely flawless. I'd probably wait and save your cash. Observe to see if toyota is really going to make an effort in resolving some of these problems. Or if they'll do what they did in the past and we see nagging issues carry over from year to year. Too early to tell yet if the 2017 will be much better for that reason honestly. Sure there are people here reporting no issues but there are also an uncomfortable number of them reporting some fairly concerning issues too. Kind of a gamble for the price of the truck if you ask me.

Go for a new one, getting TOP dollar on your current ride, I'd take advantage of that.

I've got 11K problem free miles on my TRD Sport with M/T. Just completed a 500 mile ride to the Canadian wilderness and drove straight thru no driver change and minimum driver fatigue. Great ride and even greater truck! It's a fun ride and functional at the same time when you need it.

I have a love/regret relationship with mine. I love the new interior and its freaking quiet (minus my diff howl that developed) and a lot of the little things like tailgate lock/easy lift, bedlight, the front end can look great from certain angles. But at the same time I've had the lower control arm issue (now addressed) and now my diff is howling which is concerning. For me I've lost a bit of confidence in the truck that I used to have with my 2nd gens, so I do regret my purchase from that stand point.

I feel that the 2nd Gen 4.0 will be one of the "Bullet Proof" motors like the old 1st Gen 3.4 and 4.7 from tundras land cruisers and so on. I have a feeling that this new 3.5 Toyota stuffed under the hood will have some issues later down the road. Too many new gadgets :notsure:

I have that fear in the back of my mind too... I hope we're both wrong, though. I guarantee they've torture/friction tested the hell out of it.

This^ Im really starting to regret selling my what would have been bulletproof 4.0, but even those have had issues with the secondary pumps causing some nasty valve issues 2014+ its like a $1500+ repair.

I assume the 2005 is paid for. Do you have $18K+ that you are just anxious to get rid of and have nothing better to do with it? Your IRA is fully funded for the year, you're not saving for a down payment on a new house, money is put away for kids' education, etc. Or are you thinking of making payments to have something that is new, and maybe sexy, just to replace something that is perfect?

I know the urge to treat oneself can be powerful.

agree, adding on, test drive and concentrate on the power and nothing else. do not let the salesman distract you and if he continually jacks his jaws while driving tell him to shut up. slowing down in traffic then speeding up when traffic starts moving and turning right from a stop merging into traffic are issues you need to try . then compare to your 2005. as this poster said test drive more than once.

if it has to be a 3g, i'd go 2017 but,

how about the best 2014 or 2015 you can find if reliability is a major factor? they're out there on dealer lots and a 10yr new truck is a 10yr new truck. you also likely know the nuances of the 2g to find a good from a bad one. they're also dropping in value with the new 3g on its 2nd year already.

$16k for your trade off a $$32k 2015 certified preowned dclb 4x4 v6 will get you more than standard factory warranty on a new one along with toyota certified APR at a low 2.99% 60mo with good credit. drive it for 10years and do it all over again.

If you wait for 2017 expect to probably pay more. If you want one now might be the time to jump on the 2016 train.
