I would think it's better as in beefier. thicker shock and heavier spring rate would make it set up to take more abuse offroad. I don't know how different it would be on road though. I have the icons but never owned the toytec so I can't say for sure but I would think that a 650# spring would make the ride more firm than a 600# spring. Maybe this is in my mind but cornering seems a lot smoother than stock, going over bumps not too much difference but offroad is where it will shine.

I do not know why its better? Ask Icon engineers that are in this post. And yes I had a toytec lift before the Icon lift and it is better on and off road. The Icons are also a better ride on and off road than the OME and adjustable billy shocks I used to have.

I'm trying to make this same decision, couple questions though?

-ICON is w/Outlaw and they are right where I live (pass them on way to work everyday), so shipping doesn't matter

-Since their local I have to pay tax :(

-If the difference made it more to $400, would you still think its worth it for the ICONs?

What is the purpose of you getting a lift? Is it mainly for aesthetics or do you plan on doing a lot of off-roading? ICON's have a stiffer spring 650# and wont be as soft on the road, whereas the Toytec springs are 600# and should provide a softer ride.

The thing you need to keep in mind when making your decision is that ICON's are a rebuildable shock and the Toytec's are not. Depending on your driving and how much off roading you do, the ICON's will need to be rebuilt every 1-3 years. From what I've read ICON charges ~$60 to rebuild a shock for you, which isn't too bad. The kicker is what to do with your truck while your shocks are being rebuilt. If you have a local shop that can do rebuilds you may be without your truck for a day. If not, you need to send the shocks to ICON (in California) for the rebuild... which means you have to go without your truck while the shocks are being rebuilt or put in a temporary shock until you get the ICON's back. With the Toytec setup you simply have to replace the shock when they wear out maybe every 4-5 years, which you can swap out in a day.

The ICON setup is going to perform better for you off road and may be a better route to go if you will be off roading a lot. The good thing about the ICON's is that when you get them rebuilt, they are like new again (at least the insides). The Toytec's will perform well off road too and may be a better route if your off road time is limited, since it should provide a softer ride for a daily driver.

Please keep in mind this is strictly my opinion based on what I've read and by experience. I have not owned the Toytec setup so I do not know for sure how they feel on or off road.

You may want to PM oakleyTRD to get his thoughts, he has owned both and is very knowledgeable.

thanks for the write up, you are leaning more towards Toytec because as of now I don't offroad too much and use it for a DD.

plus they are cheaper and I could always upgrade to something better in the future.

As a daily driver the Icons ride smoother than the toytecs. I have had both on the same truck. Ask or PM OakleyTRD, he just upgraded to Icons and I am sure he will tell you the same thing.

As soon as Outlaw Offroad actually ships my ICON's I will let you know how they are. Going on almost 3 weeks since I placed my order. They wont respond to my emails and since I am deployed getting a chance to make a phone call during their business hours isn't so easy for me. Just would be nice to know some kind of update.

Looking into the icons stage 1 (extended travel) kit on Toytec (Icon coilover strut 0-3.5" and rear 2.0 shock 0-3") From my research I have found that they recommend not exceeding the factory preset height of 1.75" ***Even though they advertise the shocks lift capacity from (0-3.5") of total lift*** I saw a thread on the settings and adjustments, but was for 3rd gens. never seen this subject talked about, or how it would work on the 2nd gens:frusty: My goal is to obtain a true 3" up front and level in the rear. Is this an unattainable height for the icons? I have already installed my dakar rear leaf packs (AMAZING BTW) and would suggest that route vs. the blocks in the rear. ANY Icon guys out there with some advice? :help:

I just bought Icon Stage 1 for my 08 Sport... I noticed that as well that they said in the paperwork included to not exceed 1.75" of thread showing.. I called Icon and one of their techs said that was an old print out and that the they could be adjusted up to 2.1" of thread showing which would give a 3-3.5 lift... I'm looking to get 3 inches in the front as well to match dakar leaf pack in the rear but I don't know if its a good idea to max out the front coilover shocks... It might ride a little harsher ?

You will need to keep the Coilover at around 2.5" and you will be fine.

If you got up to 3" or more, you will definitely need Aftermarket UCA's.

If you are not set with Icon, we have our UCA paired with an extended Travel King 2.5 Coilover with remote reservoirs available!
