I agree with you on modern diesels. They're so neutered and over complicated with emissions equipment. The early 2000's were the best years of diesels. Fairly clean burning, powerful and very efficient. You *could* make a new one like that, but you'd violate every federal emissions law.

Typically, diesels get better mpg than they're rated and the Mpg's don't drop much with towing. Gassers, especially toyotas, do ok when unloaded but mpg goes south big time when loaded. I drove a 70 series turbo diesel when I was in Australia for 3 days driving in deep sand fully loaded with coolers and camping gear with 7 ppl aboard. Only used a little more than a quarter tank the entire trip. These newer diesels have stupidly hard emmissions standards to comply with, just ask any vw TDI owner. Whatever happens to all the billions in fines that vw pays to our govt by the way?

Right, but it'll take forever to get your money back on the gas savings.

I may be mistaken but haven't the Washington nannies created problems with the diesels...I have a friend with an early VW diesel he loves it and I haven't heard any of the above issues, a couple more have the 5.9 Cummins and no issues to speak of.....my pick is what Ford has done with their V6 motors gobs of low end and good HP and I think have decent mpg for the output...mpg does not concern me much in a truck though anyway...IMHO enough is enough with the nannies...they need to find something else to F--K up besides vehicles.

Here's my opinion, and I do realize it's worth exactly what it costs.

It's a fucking mid-sized pick-up truck. Period. If you want to be a bad-ass heavy duty trucker buy a 3/4 ton 5.9 Cummins powered truck for pulling 28 ft. campers or you know, STFU. If you want to be a boy-racer buy a Mustang GT, SS Camaro, or you know, STFU. If you are whining about the acceleration, look on the floorboard, push down on the longest pedal you see. Repeat as necessary or you know, STFU.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to drive a 2nd Gen Tacoma (2013 60K plus miles 4.0) It does have a little better low end, And I mean a little better, not the torque monster half the retards on here claim. But holy fuck! does a parachute automatically deploy at 65mph?? Not to mention the gay ass Chevy Avalanche wheel well treatment, or the cheesy feel of the 80's econo-box interior.

I see the 3rd gen as a mid priced compromise truck, it is OK at most things and is excellent at nothing. I'm OK with that, its just a fucking vehicle it isn't the definition of who I am.

I agree with a lot of this post, although I'm nowhere near as salty. Having driven and almost buying a '16 OR 3.5, I really liked it. I thought the power was comparable to the 4.0. I do think the 4.0 does get a bit overrated in these comparisons, some of the time. I mean, it is a great engine but it is by no means a powerhouse. I think the 2nd gen was due for an update, it is hard to argue that. The 3rd gen looks more modern, brings some nice new features/tech that are welcome. But it isn't over the top, which is good. Not taking anything away from the gen2, as I love mine and I think the gen 2 is just a simple, badass truck in any configuration. It's all in what you like. But the 3rd gen fits what the market wants, I would think.

That being said, some of the '16's problems are legit. I feel bad for those owners. I feel like we all expect better from Toyota, with the reputation that follows this line of truck (and the brand in general). Obviously, this is where the community should talk about those problems and help each other out etc. But I also think some of the 3rd gen's black eye is ppl bickering about small stuff that isn't really a problem with the truck. Maybe it just didn't live up to some sort of expectation that it was never going to meet, like some of the examples above. But everyone is entitled to their opinion..

.....I think some of the small stuff about them are an issue also. Its the owner of a particular vehicle that has to make the decision if the small stuff is acceptable or not.I think if we as consumers look the other ways on small things that are issues before you know it that will be the norm.I have pretty high expectations for the vehicles I buy and I wont hesitate to have things dealt with that are not as they should be.[/QUOTE]

Not comparing the trucks, and yes the truck was about 10,000 more but and SR5 comparable Tundra isn't. I liked everything about my Taco except for the way it drove, and it was getting worse, transmission lag, low power, poor MPGs, hood flapping in the wind, wind noise from front, cruise control issues, radio shutting off by itself, I trust Toyota will fix these issues, but I don't want to deal with them on a new truck no matter what I paid for it.

I paid 45,800 for a "program" Tundra with 750 miles on it. That was $8000 off MSRP, they also had two 1794's priced similar. From what I've seen elsewhere I think I did ok. That being said anytime you buy a car your loosing money. That's just how it is.

FYI - I'm not a Tacoma basher, I bought a 2016 SR5 4 cylinder for my son. For what ever reason his truck has had none of the problems my OR had. I guess I was hoping for more, I'm sure Toyota will fix the new Engine/Transmission combo I'm just impatient.

    Getting it scheduled

Emailed it to the service manager. They knew nothing... so they said. Now they know :;)

I always research everything. Really think I was condsidering racing a 3.5 liter?? Really?? Having to manually downshift going uphills when you have an automatic sucks... not right.

    Thanks for the tip.

    Will try that thanks.
