First, let me say that my goal is not off roading, lifting etc.

However, I'd like a bit different look in the wheel department. My current target is something that kinda mimics an old skool rally wheel, rat rod, etc type of look. A steel wheel with holes, a trim or beauty ring, and a lug cover of some type, like a dog dish, baby moon, etc.

I also don't want fitment, trimming issues, don't want hanging out of the fenders, etc.. Although being closer to flush on the body would be ok.

That said, I've been noodling on and other sites, improving my understanding of backspacing/offset, etc. That said, actual experience still sometimes trumps calculations.

One wheel I've come up with that is in the area of my 'looks' goal is a 15 x 6 Ranger steel wheel, which has a 12 offset. Meaning the push out is around 1.3" (33mm). Just enough to ditch the 'flat' look of our stockers, allowing a trim ring. The ones that look like this. (no trim ring in photo)

So, has anyone actually installed these on one of our 5 lugs? Pictures?

They are cheap and plentiful. And I could figure out how to get FORD off the center cap if I worked on it a while ;)

@HackD , @SleazyPetey , or others, any thoughts or experiences on these?

    TIA.

@HackD is probably the best to answer since he's a wizard but I can at least say you'll want to remove you black box. Some people have used mustang wheels before so a different ford 5 lug like the ranger might fit but check the bolt pattern to be sure. Apparently jeep wheels are very close but don't fit. I consider my wheels an old school style but more of the off road old school. They're mickey thompson classic 3's

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
Only thing I would add would be fitment issue with the calipers. I tried forever to get a 15" rim on my '14, but unless the backspacing pushed it so far out or I used spacers it would not work. The beefy calipers are great, but 16" is the smallest I could find to fit them. I am not smart at all on 5 lug setups though and if they use the same calipers

5 lugs are stock 15'' but you do make a very great point I ended up using a 1/4" spacer on mine for them to fit the calipers

Why? Same size wheel (15x6), didn't say anything about lots taller tires.

Exactly the same. Explore the site I included in my first post. Lots of great info there.

Gone over the Top for a 5-lug..
I'm going off the information located above. I am not familiar with use of Ford rims on our 5-lugs - I do know that Chevy owners have used our 5-lug steelie rims on the older model Colorado's/S10's.

The north american Fords use a 1/2" (12.7mm) lug, while our Tacoma's use a metric 12mm lug. As such, they may need a ream out of the existing lug-nut holes to work. You will be wanting to use a set of hub-centric adapters with these Ford spec rims, to make sure that the rims are centred. This, unfortunately, is an oddball size for an adapter ring going from 60.1 to 70.6mm, and you will likely need to have a set custom made. http://www.hubcentric-rings.com/

I would strongly suggest going straight to 16" rims - bypass the 15" sizes. This also bypasses any potential caliper and suspension interference issues - as well as opens up the variety of rubber that can be put on the road. At +12 offset, with up to 235/70R16 or 235/75R16, you might well be able to leave the black-box alone and unmolested. at +12 offset, in theory, your rims/tires should line up flush with the outer fender well surface.

A few Jeep compatible rims will work on our trucks. Namely the Jeep KJ and early 2000's Wrangler 5-bolts. My aftermarket 7J-16 5x114.3mm bolt pattern rims came off of a KJ - a 2003 Jeep Liberty. They are very close in offset and back-spacing figures for the OEM Toyota 5-lug steelies.

    Thanks Hack. A few thoughts.......

So the Ford has a 12.7 (or touch bigger) hole in the wheel. No reaming needed for our 12mm stud then. Right?

If the lug seats are tapered, and tapered lugnuts are used, no hub centering is needed, as you'll have 5 lugs to center the wheel. However, some care does have to be used installing the wheel, just to make sure the lugs are correctly seated, thus the wheel centered, when torquing. I had a set up like this on my Solo II car, and I did have hub adapter rings. Which I eventually threw away. Mostly be cause changeing wheels/tires twice a month from street to racing tires, and the rings became a determent to my speed. Once I mastered the lug technique, never had an issue.

I agree with that. I'd actually like a 16x7 in the correct fitment/offset that I previously described. Just haven't come across the style I want to accomplish yet. Crown Vic / Grand Marquis wheels look about right, but I think the offset is wrong.

In the 6" wide wheel of course. Thanks for confirming that I was at least heading in the right direction.

It dawned on me today that I have a guy in the neighborhood with a Ranger. Not with the wheels I've got some interest in, but they are dimensionally the same. I'll get his truck in my drive and put one of his wheels on the front of mine and see what happens. That should be helpful.

    Thanks for the reply!

    Thanks!

I have looked at those, Coker and a couple of other places too. While the smoothie look works for some things, I really like the wheels with holes/ovals in them. Like Pontiac Rally I wheels. (wrong lug pattern :()

And I'm cheap. Ok, lets just make it frugal. So I'm looking for wheels off mass produced generic vehicles that will work. Takes more effort than shopping in a tire shop, but can save a pile 'o bucks too.

I'll keep plugging. I have time. Something will come up.
