Taco Tailgate Theft Deterance

Just do the antitheft tailgate mod. I did mine in about 2 seconds. NOBODY is going to steal it. There are litterally hundreds of ways to do this that take no time at all.....


Just scratch the crap out of it...... I used a trailer hitch for mine. Heck, sometimes people will even do it for you for free if you hang around walmart parking lots and such!

 

Great Idea, a little WD-40 to lub the locking mech as routine maintanence should keep it fine and those cables probably cost less that the "Gate Keeper".

Update: Picked up a pair IDEAL Turn key clamps for mine tailgate for security measures LOL. Got them a little big cause thats what they had at O'reilly auto parts (IDEAL size 28) going to chop a little piece cause it does scratch the paint with the extra piece. These clamps work well.

Ive heard the market in Texas for tailgates its big but i live in Cali but just you never know.

 

Thanks for the info. Bought a set of key hose clamps from autozone for $3 on the way home from work. Put a layer of double thick electrical tape down first and then put the clamp over it.

Hopefully the crooks don't wise up and start carrying around a key for these things.

a quick note for future hose-clampers: i didn't realize the hose clamp only works on the passenger side of the tailgate—you can only use one; the other size is different.

 

Not sure what year your Taco is but I put clamps on both sides of my '09. Same size for both on mine. I later learned that you only need it on one side. Anywho, I later put a Pop & Lock lockable tailgate handle on mine and don't need the clamps but left them on for added security.

 

I bought my dad this Masterlock tailgate lock for his 05...it says it doesn't fit Tacoma but it does:

pl8521. It works with existing tailgate handle along with tying into the electrical so that it unlocks with the key fob. I love it.

but yeah, i started putting a second one on the driver's side, then realized it does no good on that side.

^A prepared thief with the correct torx bit and a Makita (or a big wire cutter) will not be slowed down by this.

 

I tried that but the washer presses against the cable and doesn't let it mov as it should.

 

E-Z Clamp (a turn key worm gear hose clamp) from Autozone with removable plastic handle which tightens/loosens the clamp. It surrounds the pivot point of the tailgate. About $3.50 for a pair. Works beautifully. I drilled a hole in the removed plastic handle and carry it on my keyring. I think it would be nearly impossible to remove the clamp without the handle as there is no possibility of unscrewing the clamp nor would pliers work.

I figured, for $2.99 it was better than what it was for now. At least it'll deter all but the most determined. Did that guy mention if he used a regular house clamp or a keyed one?

 

Layers people, layers......clamp of choice, gatekeeper bracket over it, popnlock, cable washer mod, tonneau cover & a garage......with lead (led not leed) dispensing system to back all that up.
