Would you like voltages for a good known battery & starter?

Yep slow crank and click is almost always a dead battery, collapsed cell or the like. Always start with the easy stuff. Though now you know how to deal with the starter.

Hmmm, yeah I probably would have replaced the battery first, knocked the solenoid with a rubber hammer, then do what you're doing with taking out the starter.

I guess I wouldn't want to go overboard and not solve the problem , and might cause other problems.
