I really dislike spacers but am considering a set on the front only for the winter that are just thick enough to clear class S chains/cables.

Whatever I use obviously won't be as good as real chains like v-bars but it will be better than being without when coming down a steep mountain forest service road after an ice storm. Problem is that I don't yet know if a thin (like 1/4" or 3/8" ) hub centric spacer exists and if it would work with the stock studs. But Im researching.

I hear what you're saying and the scenario you mentioned is exactly the reason I was looking into it. Everything I've read on various toyota forums say to just get the good hub-centric spacers(Spidertrax) and never consider the 1/4in spacer plate unless you like losing your tire. The only thing I can find is 1 1/4in spacers. That may be what has to be done.
I also turned my wheels to full lock in both directions and after adding a spacer, I'm not sure how much clearance I would have with the fender. I'm just hoping someone looks into this thread that has actual experience and can add some input.

Most thin plates are just plates and they are crap. I think if they were hub centric and longer studs were used they should be okay. Maybe drop these guys a note and see what solution they recommend that's less than 1". They offer to provide custom quotes. If you do let me know and I might get a pair too. Might be a small price break for four.

I used the 1&1/4" spidertrax spacers and it gave me enough room to clear class s cable chains even while flexing. That was with 2" to 2.5" of lift in the front and 235 85 16 tires. Made a big difference having the front and rear chained.

I was just thinking yesterday of going with skinny tires like that instead of the 265/70/16's that are standard. Then I saw Bora wheel spacers for .75in and figured between the two of them it should work. https://www.motorsport-tech.com/4DCGI/switchtruckmodel Do you have a certain type of class S chains that you prefer?

I've only tried one set and they took some abuse. I'll update with the brand tomorrow.
