I don't have the document with me, but its worded such that they'll just do it now, whether or not you have a rattle. Essentially, they're saying that it is causing problems, even before it starts to rattle, such as reduced performance (meaning also increased fuel consumption).

Thanks for the heads up about the catalyst pipe, i'll be sure to bring up the campaign with the dealer.

I took the 4 cylinder auto for a spin last night up a paved mountain highway with switchbacks, I believe it was 6+ % grade. I noticed it did feel a bit sluggish but nothing I considered terrible to actually get up to speed. It defiantly does not have a good burst of quick acceleration up hill, but neither does my 2.4L jeep. With the pedal almost to the floor up hill it would rev up and pickup speed and then seemed it would gear down fairly soon and hold speed. Not great, not terrible. I tested out the 4hi/4lo and engine break on a gravel incline and the power and response felt good.

Given its mainly for weekend trips, and getting into hunting spots, I won't be doing daily mountain passes or towing, so I don't mind lack of acceleration steep roads and can't justify extra fuel consumption and cost for the V6 (All the V6's I've found in my area are significantly higher priced)

It's in great condition too with brand new wheels, I think I'm going to take it!

Good deal. Sounds like you ran it through a good test and you found it at least acceptable in all areas. Go ahead.

And remember, the stupid things retain their value really well. If you wind up not liking it after your mods you probably won't lose too much.

Ok now I'm really torn. I just found a manual v6 TRD off road for $4,000 more and it's private sale, so a loan would be way more on interest rates and I'd have to sell my Jeep privately although I could get a better deal for it that way.

What's the difference in long term reliability with the V6 engine compared to the 2.7?

Haven't read too many major engine problems form either camp. Mainly just replacing worn parts like idler pullies, water pump, plugs etc. There is a tiny bit more maintenance with the V6 though (ie spark plugs every 30K if using regular copper and valve adjustments).

Some older V6's had some head gasket issues. Some also would throw a code for timing chain correlation as the chain stretched a little from normal wear. Really no 2.7 issues.

I didn't mean to imply that only a rattling cat would get changed was just mentioning if his cat rattled it would be nothing to worry about. We've been replacing cats regardless if they rattle.

Buy what you like. Both are great motors and both have advantages and disadvantages.

Pulled the trigger. 2.7 auto. I took it for a day trip along a mountain highway then up into some logging roads up 1,000m eroded rocky switchbacks 20%+ grades on 4lo, plenty of power. Very happy with it.
