Is a WD hitch overkill for this small camper?

My RV dealer wants to install a fastway WD hitch when I pick my camper up friday

The hitch weight will be about 430 when I leave the dealers lot Friday

The fastway WD hitch weighs 85 pounds....could I just tow it home without any wd hitch and just look into getting a good sway control set up instead?

I dont want to add all the extra tongue weight if I dont need too

I have about an hour ride

Dry hitch weight on my trailer is 460lbs. With a shell and two full propane tanks it sags a lot without a WD hitch so I wouldn't recommend towing without it.

 

+1 for what stickyTaco suggested. I would not tow any travel trailer with my Tacoma without a WDH. Get the WDH, you'll be glad you did.

Tell the dealer to pound sand. I towed our camper home about 100 miles without one due to their ridiculous install cost(about 3000lb dry). Just take it easy and dont push it. I installed a sway controll device and WDH I purchased on Amazon for a quarter of the dealer cost. Install of everything took about an hour and super easy.

 

How much does the camper weight? I tow a dual axle 3000# loaded camper with no sway or WD hitch no issues what so ever You tong weight will be higher with a single axle but I do not believe from the pictures the camper is that heavy. Try it if the back end sags then you'll have to deal with it.

 

I tow my 1475 with just sway control. It weighs 3k with a 350 tounge weight.

 

Generally if the camper sways the tong weight is too low shift some weight forward. 12.5% of total weight is about right. If you are towing in excess of 4000# then yeah WD and sway.

 

Ken b keep in mind that your Lance has a huge storage bin up front. Anything you put in that front pass through storage will pretty much add to your total tongue weight. Sweet set up man!!!
