Locking point in bed for chain.

Trying to think of a good place to lock a chain in the bed of the tacoma. Preferably somewhere a torx bit isnt used. I will be locking my mountain bike in the bed and its easy for someone to walk by, see that its simply a torx bit holding all of the drings and come back and snatch it in minutes..

My first though was to remove the side tiedowns that use two torx bolts, drill out their back plate and use longer torx bolts but use a nylock nut and locktite.. BUT dont tighten it down. Leave it able to spin so it would require two people, one in the bed and one under the bed holding the other side. Make sense?.

Any thoughts/oppinions?

 

I would avoid loosening a bed bolt and look for an additional lock point. Ensuring your bed stays put.

The masterlock has me intrigued but i dont need another lock.. i have one with my chain that i trust more than masterlocks. Im definitely looking into it though. Thanks

And the part im talking about is a lower tiedown loop with a back plate it has no structural purpose for the bed. Its the only "silver" tiedown in the front of the bed on the sidewalls

 

I was struggling with this problem the other day too and just ended up putting a chain through the D rings and the bike frames. I figure there's little to nothing that's entirely thief-proof if they want it bad enough.

 

Thieves are typically thieves of convenience. The bed bolts are a real doozy to loosen up, and you need to have a T-55 Torx wrench on hand.

 

Yes, mostly if you simply make it a bit more difficult they'll move on to easier prey.

Stick a BB in the D-ring torx socket and seal it in with RTV to deter anyone from loosening the bolt. I suspect they'd just snip the d-ring though.

Interesting, I didn't know Toyota marketed a Yakima mount.

only downside is you have to take the front wheel off

 

Good find. Helpful for anyone with existing Yakima stuff as you can easily re-core to match the keys/cores you might already have.

You'll want to add

t-nuts and appropriate security screws if mounting to a rail, of course.

 

I ended up using this master lock anchor and a good kryptonite chain. Thanks for the master lock idea. I positioned it next to the left storage compartment and it looks factory. Thanks

Simple. Fill in the Torx slot with liquid nail.

 

some butthole tried to steal my kayak out of my bed by unscrewing the d-ring but used a regular screwdriver it looks like. its stripped pretty good so dont think its coming off

edit- while not the best looking idea... stripping it or filling the head in with some kinda cement could solve that issue. then to have a cut proof chain

 

I simply use the small d rings in the floor with a braided cable and lock. I am never leaving my bike for long. 30 minutes at most. Garage / house or travel to trail.

Serious thieves will be gone in seconds no matter what. I only worry about the 2 bit thieves.

 

How did u mount this.. It can. Only mount to the plastic bed? Not very secure. Im. Having this issue currently

 

Except its bolted to plastic lol so wtf is the point?

 

Except the bed isn’t plastic. It’s a fiber glass composite bed. Good luck ripping a nut and bolt through it. You’d have an easier time breaking the actual bolt.

 

well i bought the same lock went home and scratched my head like ...seems way to easy to break out
