I have a 2006 Tacoma TRD Sport Crew Cab. 5th character "U" in the vin, 270k miles. I have seen 2 different 1GR-FE listed for tacos for this year, a 4000cc and a 3956cc both using the "U" engine code. I'm in a position where I might need to replace my engine (questions about that in a separate post) with a used "Long Block" engine. So...

    1. How do I tell if I have a 4000cc or a 3956cc ?? Is there a marking someplace ? Are there differences in the external bolt on parts for these 2 engines?

    2. If I do decide to replace the engine will either engine bolt right in and use manifolds, alterntor, compressor, etc,etc off my current engine ?

    thanks
    Joel

Just as an update to this thread. I got some replies to this question on another forum and got this....

"they are both the same 4.0l because 3956 is close to 4000 and just loose talk causes that as there is no 3.9l Toyota engine. Also other models such as the 4Runner, Tundra, FJCruiser, Lexus, etc. use essentially the same 4.0 engine but with differences in the variable valve timing creating higher HP and torque but can't be directly swapped because of the electrical controls and exhaust manifolds I believe. For the Taco the clue is going to be with oil capacity as one engine, such as in the 2WDs holds less oil, and has a different oil pan, probably because of mounting clearance below the oil pan"

    AND
    based on my supplied VIN....

"Your truck is Model Code GRN270L-PRADKA and was manufactured in April 2004. This info. will be on the door jam
