Hello TW - would like some thoughts on the subject.

I currently have a 14 DC TRD sport 4x4- very little in the way of mods (cosmetic stuff like window tint and LED interior lights) with 19000 miles.
I am strongly considering ordering a 17 Limited 4x2. Two thoughts are that I have recently moved out of the snowbelt into the sunbelt so the need for 4x4 has diminished greatly (not really into offroading). Also would consider taking the positive equity from the '14 and applying to various house projects.

Anyway thought I would use the forum to bounce off the ideas.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Is your 14 paid off? Are you paying cash for the 17 or financing?

Personally, I would keep the 14.

Wait and see if the bugs in the 16s have been worked out of the 17s, then upgrade as you want IMO.

The 2016 and 2017's are identical with the exception of a sliding rear window. They didn't even plug the Lower Control Arm holes in the 2017's which was a TSB for the 2016's....

If you want a third gen tacoma, I'd opt for a 2016, because you can probably swing a slightly better deal on one than the new 2017s without paying the "annual model year" price increase.

Positive equity? The 14 isn't worth more than a 2017 limited

There's no such thing as positive equity on the 2014. Surely you don't think it's worth more than you paid. Sure, it has a high resale value, but it hasn't increased in value since it drove off the lot. It isn't a split window Vette.

Wait. You're 14 is still serving you, and it's not clear if the 17's have worked out the bugs.

Limited wheels, extra rope hooks in bed.

He owes less on the truck than it's worth.....

If he owes $10,000 and it's worth $19,000....$9,000 in equity...

    Positive equity.

But it's kinda redundant to say "positive" equity???

Even if he owes nothing and gets 30k in trade, a 2017 is still going to cost more. Nothing positive about it

Nice, now some power seats would be "about time" ! Although I did see a new Ridgeline today and it made me appreciate my 14 dinosaur regardless of all the fancy newness.

I'm in same situation OP ... however, I was looking at upgrading to 17 4wd.

I just ordered myself a '17 and if I were in your position I wouldn't be. Keep your '14 man! Truck is still basically brand new and the fact it has 4x4 will keep the resale value higher than if you went with 4x2.
