How far do shells typically overhang the side of the bed? I guess it depends on the shell but is it an inch or more? The reason I'm asking is I'm going to have bed Line-Xed and I just removed the plastic drop in bed liner and plastic side rails that were on truck since it was new, when I got the side rails off I noticed they had over time scuffed up the paint and in places wore it down into the primer. Was planning on having the Line-X "over the rail" option done and would like it to go down far enough to cover the paint damage.

But now I'm thinking that down the road when I get a shell, I might end up with weird black line between the shell and the bed body. I'd say the damaged paint is no more than 1 1/2" down from the top of the bed rail.

Line X is scheduled for tomorrow so any replies would be appreciated.

It may be close but my guess is that it will be visible under the topper edge.

I can understand because that does seem pretty far down to cover with Line-X. Usually the lip of the coating just comes just a little over the round edge of the bed rail.

Just my $0.02, but I'd postpone the Line-X and have the paint cleaned up.

Not that it's the same for a 1st generation and topper will vary, but this is what the lip looks like on my 2008 with an ATC brand topper.

They can cover that. There's no real standard, they can do whatever you want.

Being dark green the Line-X may not be as obvious, too.

thanks for replies. I just measured and damage is only down 1 1/4" from top of bed rail, so hopefully shell might cover it. Getting paint repaired will cost me whereas the Line X won't cost me any more to cover it. Plus would give me a bit more protection from leaning crap against the bed.

That's a totally sensible way to go. Line-X will protect the truck fine so it's really up to you on appearance.

Well it's done and it will show under a cap, but I can live with that. Beats having to have it repainted cause it certainly didn't buff out.
