What all would or do I need to make the swap from a 2.7 5 spd to a 3.4? Is it pretty straight forward or not really worth it?

I've been interested in this swap as well. So far I've found you need to make new motor mounts, or cut them off the donor vehicle. New fuel lines need to be made (I would just use the rubber fuel injection lines). The ecu&pcm from the donor vehicle and depending on what transmission you have you would need the computer for the trans I believe. Not a terribly difficult swap, but def not for a beginner.

It's definitely worth it. When I did my swap, 3.4 into a 99 2.7 5spd. I had a donor vehicle (4runner). I removed the cab, easier to work on. Motor mounts on the frame moved back, Tranny aligned with the Trans crossmember. Swapped the wire harness and ecu. Modified Trans tunnel for the auto selector, added fuel filter under cab. Installed single brake pedal assy. The exhaust bolted up. Without a donor it can nickel and dime you. Good Luck.

Id just do a ls swap before the 5vz.

Alot of work to swap in a motor that makes under 200hp.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
It can make a lot more with some mods, and still be more reliable than any GM junk! Gimme a Toyota engine any day over an LS, if you want stupid power, swap in a twin turbo 2JZ from a Supra into a Tacoma, you'll have a hard time keeping the rear tires in traction with the asphalt!

Its just aswell to boost the 2.7 and with money saved just put that extra into motor and youd be making more hp.

Turbo 2jz swap can cost well over 10 grand. Nothing wrong with the ls engines. Best bang for buck engine swap imo. Cxracing makes install kits that come with motor/tranny mounts, headers, coolant lines, and other stuff.

To the OP it comes to where your skills are the strongest

Some have trouble with the mechanical part some look at the electrical work and throw in the towel.

These engine swaps all come down to what the owner really wants if it is practical or not.

I like my 3.4 engines in fact I think they have more then enough horsepower to do what I need.

I do agree want horsepower you can`t go wrong with Chevy engines no experience with the new engines but it did get old having to rebuild them (60`s early 70`s) between 75 and 100 thousand miles.

x2, you're looking at a lot of work either way.

If I was in the same spot I would consider selling my truck and buying one with a 3.4 before trying to swap one

I would love to find a 97' TRD standard cab with the 3.4 5 spd and a supercharger...kinda my dream truck. I didn't know they even made standard cab 3.4s until I bought a 99' standard cab 2.7 5 spd...FML. I've only seen 2 of those 97' standard cab 3.4s with supercharger for sale in 2 years. I love the 2.7 but I wished I had the 3.4 and an elocker to start with a build now the more I think and look at things...

I didn't think it'd be that expensive to swap the 3.4 out and put an elocker in the 2.7...so now I'm basically left with turbo or supercharge my 2.7 and get an ARB for the rear. Since I have 529s it's not worth buying an elocker and rehearing it.

They didn't make a TRD version till 98 or 99 as I bought mine new and yes the guys like me that have the regular cab
with the TRD superchager and 5 speed don't want to give them up, now I'm at 501,000 miles with it supercharged the whole time And yup they are little rocket trucks as far as trucks goes and as dependable as they come.
