That is what I thought if I ever get rid of my truck and buy a small SUV like a Mazda CX-5 or a Toyota RAV4. I really don't need a truck.. just think I do.

I doubt your rates go up. It wasnt a traffic violation resulting in an accident. It will go against your comprehensive. Take a look at your comprehensive deductable and get some body shop quotes. A body shop may be able to get a t.g. off a wrecked truck and paint it for less than your deductible...

For what it is worth, I had a similar dent in the tailgate of my last truck (Dakota)- I just used a pipe clamp and two blocks of wood to squeeze it back in place- was almost as good as new and the truck already had some "character", so I was happy.

$400. My tailgate was backed into at a Lowes when the truck was <90 days old. Local body shop sold me a tailgate from a totaled 2016 Tacoma they had in their storage lot that was the same color as my truck.

I would say you got extremely lucky. FYI that price I post was just the shell.

Did you get a look at the totaled truck? How bad was the damage?

I am afraid that is NOT a comprehensive claim that will fall under his collision deductible.

It's considered a collision claim since it was between two "vehicles". That deductible is $1k, so it looks like I'll be paying for this out of pocket or living with the damage and hoping someone rear ends me :(

Take your truck and get some estimates at body shops .. it may not be as much as you'd think to fix. One positive is they can take tailgate off and keep to work on while you still have your truck to drive

I'm confused at what happened. New to trailiering. I well be towing a 5x9 uhaul cargo trailer. My bed won't fit so my plan is to put it in the bed with the tailgate down. What could happen?

I think you might have to be careful with tighter turns because with your tailgate down I guess it could possibly hit the trailer

rent a trailer large enough to haul the full load of whatever so you don't have to have your tailgate down. or get a big uhaul truck and tow your vehicle behind it.

If you need to tow and have the tailgate down I highly suggest you open your owner's manual to page 117... :(
