How to transport Kayaks

I have 2016 SBDB and I need to take my two kayaks up to the lake(2-2.5 hrs away). I don't have a roof rack yet. Any sugguestions on how to take them? Thanks in advance everyone.

Harbor Freight has the hitch bed extenders for $60. Works great for my kayak.

Sometimes easier said than done, especially with the short bed. I have a tandem kayak that is over 13 ft. and is too long to ride in the short bed. The bed extender gives 3 extra feet to work with.

 

What length are the yaks?

 

Check out prisnu racks. Worth every penny. Put a kayak on it just about every other weekend.

 

This is the real crux of it. For example, mine is 17'6". No way in hell that's going to work in a 5' bed no matter what kind of extender you use. I think a decent option for OP might be simply the foam crossbar pads for kayaks, they are grippy on the bottom and depending on the kayaks you may be able to get away with just from and rear tie downs over the foam.

 

Yep, that's why I asked. Mine are rec 9.5' yaks so I could put them in the bed if needed for a weekend. But I probably wouldn't. Bought my racks before my yaks.

Yakima Jet Stream bars. 60inch so I can put both next to each other. Don't have a picture of them loaded but works great, I leave the rack on all the time, it is very quiet.

 

Harbor Freight rack works great. This is a 12 foot kayak.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I plan on getting a roof rack later this year. But for now I think I'm just going to get a bed extender

The one I ordered is just the extended cab so don't know if the roof racks will work. I was thinking of making a rack out of aluminum that bolts to the tie down rails in the bed. Will have all Winter to figure it out.

 

This slides in to the bed. I attach it with ratchet straps an I have little aluminum stabilizers for support. I can install or remove it in 5 minutes easy.
I have since moved the tie-down eyes down to the front of the crosspieces. I hold the kayaks down with ratchet straps, no bow or stern lines. I know many think this is crazy but I have not used bow or stern lines for 35 years. I do change out the hooks on the ratchet straps for carabibers however (hardware store variety).
