Hey guys, long time reader first post. Been researching prices on a certified pre-owned '16 Tacoma for a couple months now and found one that I think is a decent deal. Would like some of your opinions.

    '16 Toyota certified pre-owned Tacoma SR5 /XP Package
    Silver
    V6 Automatic
    4x2
    15k miles
    Carfax 1 owner

    27,200 + 1,632 tax + 318 fees + 694 dealer fee

    29,150 out the door.

    Yay, nay?

Not sure id go for a used 2016 just yet. Too many issues on the third gen and this could be a problem vehicle that somebody dumped. That's just based on my experience because mine has been problematic. YMMV

It could have been that someone traded up to a TRD. They could have also got something completely different. It doesn't mean its a problem truck, plus there is warranty. The only thing I see questionable is the 694 dealer fee, what is that for? You may be able to get that close to a new 2016 now that the 2017 rolled out. If its what you want and it fits your budget, go for it. If you don't feel like its right or have questions( which you must because you are trying to get approval from internet forum) it may not the right deal for you.

    4x2 Sr5 auto for $27.2k with 15k miles?

....might as well buy new. Seems overpriced for the most vanilla tacoma configuration available.

Also strongly consider 4x4 before you buy. That's probably a large reason for low mileage used 4x2 tacomas. People realizing they spent a ton of money for a 4x2 basic truck when a 4x4 is only a couple thousand more and way more capable with a lot better resale (until you get rear ended of course).

I paid $30980 for my new 2016 SR5 DCLB 4WD with appearance package, tow package and some little extras, that price seems high.

Is this a valid concern with it being toyota certified? 12month comprehensive plus 100k/7year powertrain

Trying to negotiate with these dealerships is like trying to talk someone into letting you punch them in the face. Besides quoting invoice prices how do I get to a more reasonable price?

Smitty, has had a bad experience/lemon, I would say its fine, a lot of CPOs/lease returns/dealer demos, seen them for the 2nd gens too, warranty will cover it, one guy here already has 40k miles on his 16 with no issues. There's some nuances and some things that may be issues down the road may not, but if you like the truck I don't see any reason to not get it, just try to haggle the price down a bit more.

That means nothing. Drive the vehicle yourself and look hard for issues that are brought up here on this forum. Otherwise you'll spend the better part of 100k miles hearing "that's normal" from the dealer unless it is a blatant issue.

I know, this is my 5th Tacoma, patience, I would go in and simply say hey I can get a new one for the same price if not slightly more, why should I buy this used one kind of deal. I test drove 3 16s and spent a lot of months back and forth before I bought mine. It was mid year, 17s rolling in, its an sr5 (not as popular as the OR/Sports) and they had 2 on the lot same config, so easier to negotiate.

Well being that Toyota is slow and/or apprehensive to fix many of these complaints (driveline vibration, rear differential failure and howling, and hood adhesion failure, squeaking leaf springs) yes it is an issue. That's the problem with mine I have several major annoyances that Toyota has not been able to fix under warranty or they claim that it's "normal" for the vehicle. So warranty only helps so much.

Good news is you can get a ton of information here on what to look for and inspect that sucker with a fine tooth comb....test drive the snot out of it. Find out if these issues are present.

You need to email blast dealer Internet sales managers directly and be willing to travel a bit for the best deal.
