I love those bumpers. I'd get something like that if I had a vehicle that would do light off roading and not need a high clearance bumper

Can I install my bumper/winch on and then spool in the new synthetic rope afterward once the bumper is on the truck with the winch mounted?

That's how i did mine, also how the instructions from the manufacturer said to do it. Getting the line through the fairlead would be tough to do otherwise and it'd be a lot more difficult to get the line on the winch without power to the motor.

Yes. I put the bumper and winch on the truck, a week later, hooked power to winch, a week later i spooled the line. I wouldn't spool the line before having it the bumper and winch hooked up to the truck.

Yes. Just make sure that your winch spool is ready to accept the terminal end of of your winch line. You don't want to be finagling that stuff when the winch is installed and have no room for your hands in tight quarters.

You want to spool it under load. I'm surprised the manufacturer of your winch doesn't list that in the instructions, I know warn does. Unless you didn't RTFM.

^ definitely this. I had a hell of a time getting the screw in for the line because there was no room to work. Be patient with it.

And then as the next guy said - spool it under load. I did mine on a slight incline while attached to a friend's car. Make sure you properly secure the car and that you stay out of the way. Keep checking the line every so often as you spool the winch line. Best to have two people do it, or you can do it yourself. But as most things in life go, a second person is much more fun.

Thanks for all the tips, guys! I'll go ahead and mount the bumper without the rope. I just need to get a hold of a relocation kit for the control box first.

An opportunity to (possibly) pick up one of these has presented itself. Anyone have any suggestion on the following choices for a winch:

    Warn VR8k with synthetic line

    OR

    Superwinch 1510200 LP10000 Winch, 10,000lbs with cable

    OR

    WARN VR10k with cable

All will be around the same price and I would swap any cable winch I get with synth line.

What would you do? What would you get? Is 8k enough?

To date 8k has been plenty for me but I also carry two snatch blocks in case it isn't.

The theory I have always used is 1.5 times your GVW. Mine fully loaded is a tad over 6k. So I run a 9k winch. If you are looking at those 10k winches make sure they will fit whatever bumper you are going to put them in before you buy. Good luck!

I just checked out that link, that's a good idea. I eyed one too, I'm going to look into making something like that. (in my "free time" haha) My friend just recently got a new HD sewing machine, it goes through 4 layers of carhartt like butter. When I accomplish the task, I'll post some pics.

Damn, I can already feel my wallet getting lighter. Do you have any more pics, in particular the mounting plates and the structural steel underneath. They say impersonation is the sincerest form of flattery. But if I do it right the first time...
