I have decided to get a quad for some added fun on camping trips. It will be used for light wheeling with my oldest son on front or back. He is almost 4. In a few years or so I will get him his own. The one I get now will become my wife's and I will get a new more powerful one.

Def need to buy used in the 1-3k range.

I have never owned a quad.
    What brand/model is recommended?
    Engine size?
What should I look out for?
    Typical maintenance?

This. Honda is the only 4 wheeler I'll ever own.

I grew up a Honda guy. (Of course, I grew up learning that quads were for posers and red necks. We all road 2 wheels.) But when my wife couldn't handle a bike, I got her a quad. We did a Honda 400EX, which is a sport quad. Bad choice. Solid rear axle and rock hard suspension makes trail riding miserable. Then we got her a Polaris Sportsman. It was like getting out of a Camero and into a Mercedes. VERY plush ride and their no-shift transmission is amazing.

Down side is that their very heavy and very expensive. So, YMMV.

Big tires, big lift, Lots of stuff's.
To be honest I'd hold out and save your money. Honda's are good around a farm or a piece of property but suck for mountain riding, way under powered and not much clearance. Shoot me a text I'll let you and the wife take my two brute forces out.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
450R suspension makes a 400EX ride like a Cadillac, very easy swap and cheap to do. That's what I did for mine, anyway. Stock shocks are like pogo sticks, they suck, upgrade to 450R shocks and it's like a whole different machine; it rides better, corners better, lands better, soaks up the trails better, it does everything better!
