What all do I need to cover up so I don't mess anything up? Motor is covered in mud and I need to clean it .

I have never covered anything up when detailing my engine bay, I've just been careful not to use high pressure or be too close.

Don't spray water directly into the alternator. Other than that you should be fine. I also like to clean the engine when it's cool. I doubt spaying cold water on a hot aluminum block would crack it, but I'd rather not find out.

I just use some Simple Green cut 50/50 with water in one of those pump sprayers. I like to wet down the front-end and fenders first with some cool water, then apply the SG to the cold engine. I let it sit for about a minute and rinse it off with low pressure water (garden hose). Doing this 3-4 times a year makes it easy to clean up without any drama. The engine compartment is not a sealed area and is designed to handle a certain amount of moisture.

I've heard of people putting plastic shopping bags on to cover the fuses and alternator. I usually don't cover anything and rinse it off with a garden hose. Never wanted to try to pressure wash it. Subd for answers anywho.

Also where do you even find simple green? I can't find it anywhere. (Haven't look hard, but still)

I use Simple Green for everything, from mopping my shop floor to windshield washer fluid to a tacking additive in bulk glyphosate mixes. Available at Lowe's normally. I'll have to try it now for engine bay cleaning.

Yup, Simple Green is the way to go. I've been using it for years. I cut it to 50/50 for the engine, wheels, tires etc. and I cut it down to 70/30 ish for the interior.

im a newbie Simple Green user and I really like it to clean my rubber tires most effective ive ever used, I used to buy those off the shelf tire/wheel cleaners but diluted Simple Green does it better at less cost I get it at HomeDepot
