Is 116,000 miles too many miles for a 2011 Tundra to buy? As far as I can tell all scheduled and prominent milestone inspections and service has been accomplished. Just curious...

My dad has a 2011 Tundra TRD OR 4.6L with 160,000 miles on it. He actually just paid it off last week. The truck has needed no abnormal repairs though! I say go for it if it's the right price.

Don't get the 2011. It's not covered by Toyota for the design issue with the AIP system.

The secondary Air Injection System. It is notorious for the pumps and valves to go out in them in the 2nd generation Tundras. However only 2007 to 2010 Tundras are covered under factory warranty up to 150k miles.

Mine went out and I had to either replace them myself or pay the dealership $2k.

Check out the threads on this over at Tundras.com

Oh, is that what makes that weird noise at startup? Ours is out of the warranty anyway

Yes, and it lasts for less than a minute. Toyota extended the warranty on just those parts to 10 yrs / 150k miles on the '07 to '10 models.

The system injects air into the exhaust system to heat up the CAT faster.

Ahhhhh I've always wondered what that noise was. Is there no way to just remove it if it breaks?

Read all about it (attached). Like I said, avoid the 2011, I wish I'd known this before I bought mine.

Cost me over $500 to do it myself but still alot cheaper than the $2k my dealership wanted.

You can remove it but then you'll still get the CEL and won't pass your next emmissions test.

There is a bypass kit you can buy but I've heard horror stories that it throws an ECM code because of a software upgrade Toyota implemented.

Yikes! That probably wouldn't have prevented us from getting one. It's still a great truck and does what we ask of it. I'll take a read later, gotta go work on the Tacoma.

Best of luck to you. By the way, I've got 113k miles on mine right now so 115k miles is nothing.
