2016 Tacoma crankshaft sensor issue

OP, thanks for posting. There are several treads on this issue, but more info is better. At lease one member bought a CPS to carry as an emergency spare. I hope Toyota gets it sorted out soon. I'm sure it affects a very small percentage of trucks, but it's certainly the most common "dead on the side of the road" failure I've seen on this forum; though the total was less than 10 last I looked.

 

I was looking at some info on the trans and the trans ECM does look at the CPS.

 

But an issue where the vehicle dies with no warning? What if you stranded on the highway where people are zipping by you at 70 plus mph like here in the dfw area, one mess up with someone not paying attention and slamming into you? To me this is a recall issue. But like other manufacturers they will wait till people die as a result I'm sure.

 

If your truck said auto trans overheat, I wouldn't be surprised if it did indeed overheat. Low trans fluid from the factory is a known issue in the 2016. I wouldn't leave that dealership without them checking the trans fluid level. And if it's low, it may have cooked your trans. Toyota sets their trans temp warning really high. @gearcruncher

 

Actually this is 17. We had two in one day today.

 

Depends on if there are repeat failures on the CPS on the same trucks after replacement indicating a possible design flaw. If its a single failure on a lot of trucks but no repeats after the initial CPS was replaced, that to me would indicate a bad batch from the supplier.

In most fuel injected engines, the CPS has become one of the most critical components and can lead to a single point of failure leaving you on the side of the road.

 

17 out of 150k on the road? Oh god...

 

This seems to be happening consistently around the 10k mark. Anyone hear of one failing on a m/t yet? Just wondering what the dash says on those?

 

I'll bet you a $100 bill there is no recall within 6 months

17 reported on the forum. There are likely less than 1000 3rd gen owners on the forum. Most owners will not use a forum which leads me to believe the issue is more widespread.

 

That assumes every failure comes to a forum to report it. We probably have 3% of 3Rd gen Tacoma owners actually posting here....if that

 

What part of the country do you live and has it been extremely hot in your area recently like the day of failure?

Just trying to determine environmental data for those that have suffered failures. A few recently were down in the southwestern US.

 

I'm sure the number is more than reported on this forum but, as I said before, membership here is skewed to those with problems. Many people like OP, only join when they have a problem to report/investigate.

 

Sorry, You made it sound like you had info on all 3rd gens. There's close to 195k members on tacomaworld, the what have you done to your Tacoma page is 1500 pages. I think we are closer to 5000 3rd gens on the forum. You also must account for guests who view the forum without a cps issue, whom would post if said issue came to fruition, like our friend Farley.

 

Hopefully everyone that experiences this problem goes beyond just getting it fixed and contacts Toyota directly to express their concerns.

 

Hmmm.. there are several "annoyances" with the 3rd gen to be sure, but these CPS failures have me second guessing the reliability of my truck.

I don't recall reading about it in any of the other threads, but have there been symptoms showing up prior to the sensor shitting the bed?

None, it just shits the bed.

 

Carrying around a spare component critical to the continued operation of my truck reminds me of the "good ol days" - when my father always had a ballast resistor in the glove box.
