2016 Tacoma crankshaft sensor issue

Does this mean the newer part is and will continue to use the exact same part number?

 

seriously, go grab it and take a close up, clear picture from the connector side. you should see a small grid-like marking.

this is how toyota tells the "good" from the "bad" ones.

they didn't really specify when exactly the part got revised, but it was around March or April.

unfortunately to check on the truck, you basically need to remove it to inspect it.
one 10mm bolt holds it in. easy to remove if the engine isnt hot.

yes. same part number. i had a truck in for service with the "stalled on highway and would not restart" symptom. checked it out the next day and it worked perfect with no check-engine light. tech assistance knows about it, but they dont post it anywhere, officially.
we ordered two to help ensure we got a "new style" one. if we still have the other one at my work, i'll snag a picture of it tomorrow to show the marking.

Will the heat in the glove box affect this thing overtime? I'd have to imagine that it gets plenty hot under normal operating conditions. Thank for your help.

 

Nice. If I were in your shoes I'd put the new one in now and keep the old one as a spare to reduce the chances of any failures on the road. Then you could also confirm your old one does not have the mark.

 

I had the same thought. @Murrayb4 can I simply unplug, unbolt and install this new one? Any special procedures beyond that? Disconnecting battery or ????.

 

its a crap-shoot on pre-April 2016 trucks. two co-workers have 2015 produced trucks, and they have no issues.. mine happens to be a June 2016 build. i honestly havn't pulled my sensor to check it out as a "just in case" scenario.

i also doubt it was every one of the old sensors that was affected. im sure the manufacturer can produced thousands a day and stockpile them.
it could have been one assembly line out of dozens. it could be every single one. who knows. maybe its only a few thousand, or a few hundred... that info isn't out there, i dont know.

 

It's a crap shoot that the old one might be bad but a near certainty the new version is good. Correct?

 

the connector has a large rubber boot that makes it fun to disconnect. i believe the release tab on the harness faces towards the back of the truck.

a simple 10mm socket on a 1/4" drive ratchet should do it.
no need to pull the battery. just unbolt, unplug, and reverse. just dont try it on a hot engine unless you need to. no reset procedures or anything required.
you wont lose oil or anything. passanger wheel well, move the rear rubber flap between the body and frame, look towards the back of the motor, follow a wire harness down and you'll see the silver 10mm bolt holding it in. takes just a few minutes

according to tech assistance, and the owners of the trucks that have had these new ones installed..yes. im just a tech. but they have seen this issue a while ago and have said this is "the fix".


there are many other issues that they DID NOT elaborate on.

the truck i worked on with this issue had only 1100 miles on it.

i dont think its time-related. just "random" sensors that were bad.

 

outside of work..no.

i'll look into this tomorrow.

they did not change part numbers, just revised the part. that small marking is the only distinguishable difference.

this is very common with parts. when there is a significant change, they often update the part number.
