I agree with you there. I used to have the normal hitch system where it attached to the frame, I had one bike almost fall off twice on it. After that I got the hitch one with wheel trays. Its been perfect for commuting ever since but I also don't drive on dirt roads that much in transit to where I go riding at besides maybe a few miles when I get to the resort.

Two words: One Up. Easy to use, secure, very stable on and of road. Clears tailgate when tilted down (at least on my 3rd gen).

Outside of the threads commented, is there a brand that is preferred by Tacoma Owners?

Hey guys I am looking into a rear bumper with a tire carrier and was curious if anyone has a hitch mounted bike rack that fits behind your spare tire? It seems there arnt many testimonials of this online.

IMG_2975.jpg I've had my 1upUSA rack for over 6 years. Great for MTB and roadies alike. I love how quickly I can load/unload and I think it's still the best looking rack on the market. Highly recommend!

I have this Thule rack. love it. Very simple and quick to get the bike on. I can put my tailgate all the way down as long as there's no bike. Although I don't put any weight on the tailgate at that point because a peice of metal lays right on the backup camera. I have yet to risk that.

Just some food for thought... I would MUCH rather have my carbon bike hitch mounted rather than roof mounted... Ponder this, if rocks can put chips/cracks into windshields, then imagine what they can do to your frame. Dirty bikes are part of life... The additional drag, wind noise, and high speed exposure to rocks/bugs/junk is why I choose to hitch mount my bike. I have an XTR Snugtop topper on my '12 DCSB and have never had an issue with significant road muck slung onto my bike.

I just bought a pad from swagman. I'll be using it for the first time today... all four bikes strapped on ready to go. I'll post pictures later.

Nothing yet - just got it two days ago!
No front mount, yet. Still trying to find the right bumper with receiver. Let me know if you guys have found good options.

But - rear carrier? The Thule T2 Pro XT. Absolutely. We've done 800 miles with it so far, at least. Two 29'er mountain bikes.

I tail-drug the hitch on a cement driveway (yes, once sleeved into the stock 2017 TDR Pro hitch, the bike rack hit the ground.... the transition of our cabin's driveway is NUTS)… and the metal guard protected the plastic tightening knob just fine.

I will get the 2-bike extension for the rack soon. But damn, does that make for a lot of extra distance behind the truck. I may mount some trailer lights to that 4th bike's rail.

The rack is awesome. We have hauled bikes through the back country, and they've done just fine. Rack has never "loosened up" bouncing around offroad.

Thule gets my vote for the T2 Pro also. Mine has been all over VA and took a trip from VA to SC last year without issues. This is my second Thule hitch rack (First one, a base station, lasted 15 years and I sold it for $100) and I’m always impressed with their construction and enginuity.

Guys, I just bought the Thule XT2 Pro, and the tailgate hits the rack when the tailgate is lowered - no matter what the position the rack is in. Am I missing something? I would think that being able to lower the tailgate without putting a dent in it would be an important feature to everyone.

Correct, the lip of the tailgate cap comes in contact with the pivot point's material when lowered. I don't ever place any weight on the tailgate during that moment, just have to be careful. Small issue, but out weighed by the awesomeness of the rack.

Thule X2 with expansion. Or just a tailgate mat or both.
Bikes combined are worth more than the truck. Had 8 in total. 4 on the tailgate 4 on the rack.

this is a hell of a stretch of the word "ruined." your bike got dirty. clean it.

I've got a thule-hitchmount but it's a frame carrier not a wheel carrier. It has provided excellent service for about a decade and looks basically new.

Thule T-2, but it's a carry over from our Outback. I'm guessing the tailgate won't open, but it's an awesome rack. Ours is maybe 8 years old, still works great!
