A group of friends I are going to be driving down the morning of sept 23rd and camping on the beach till sometime sunday. Anybody local to there that can answer some questions?

1.) We went in april last year and the mosquitos were out in strike squadrons. Are they as bad in septemeber?
2.) any light wheeling we can get into? My stock OR and a couple of close to stock 4x4 trucks and one Jeep will be with us.

Not much light wheeling to be done other than sand. We haven't had much rain lately so I suspect it might be a little soft out there.

Mosquitos haven't been as bad this summer and wouldn't expect it to get any worse in late sept.

Look up bryang beach. It's 15 to 20 mins from Surfside. There are some light wheeling for stock vehicles. Make sure you have straps! Soft sand will take any 4x4

I ventured off in the dark last year, a bit inebriated, to take a leak and ended up stepping square in the middle of a nest. My legs hurt for weeks.

My buddy thought of that, while the rest of us drove down the road to the port-o-crappers he decided to coin the term "scubadeucing".

:rofl:Those things are out of control! If they don't clean them out. It's best if you do in there at night with no lights.

Theres a mom and pop convenience store before you get down to the main corner. They have two portocrappers out back that arent advertised. We'd go in there to buy a bottle of water each time and use the crapper. Didnt have an issue. My flashlight had a clip on it so id just clip it to one of the vents at the top. Worked out nicely. The TP choice was subpar however. Solid 3/5 stars.

Was at San Luis Pass Friday, the water looked horrible and the wind was blowin SSE at 15mph. No skeeters to report. Not sure about in Sept though. A decent south wind may offer some relief from the bloodsuckers. There is a little bit of wheelin under and around the bridge on the Galveston side. Never been to Bryan Beach but def looks interesting and sketchy in some areas. Matagorda is always fun and you can drive a ways down the beach front. I was there Saturday morning. The crowd was sparse further down the beach from the entrance. The second pic is of Bryan Beach.

I was out at SLP Saturday. I can report the same wind, but probably 5-10 mph higher. Water was muddy brown and not as clear as it has been. Sand was plenty soft, though the rains this week probably packed it down. No skeeters.

Personally, I would wade the south shoreline of xmas bay. Scout out the area for access points. The areas in the screen shot generally produce and the ground is firm. Hard packed mix of sand, mud and grass. There is an access point about .5 mi S to the intercoastal. I'm always down to fish if any of you fellas wanna meet up sometime. I found a pdf of most if not all access areas for the TX gulf coast.

Went to SLP after work yesterday evening. Wind was from the N at 1-4 mph. Drove to surfside jetties first and the channel side was like glass. The parking lot was full however only a few people were fishing. As the sun went down, the skeeters came out. We headed for SLP and decided to check out the Freeport side first. No wind and lots of mosquitoes, I mean LOTS! Went over the bridge accessed the beachfront and posted up along the beachfront. Surprisingly, no mosquitoes. The further away we went from the dunes and brush, the blood suckers became sparse. Tide was falling and current was strong. A 6 oz pyramid weight wasn't enough to hold the big hunk of mullet. Stayed till midnight and split. No fish to report but definitely worth the venture. Any of you fellas got a fishing report (that includes catching fish?) Anyone down to meet up out there to fish? Keep me posted.

I'll probably end up investing in another rod/reel after this trip. But my buddy is taking all of his and has a TON. So hopefully we'll hook something. We got a 5 foot black tipped shark and a large red buff last year.
