Alright so took the truck out to the dunes for the 4th, came back and noticed it started making this whine noise when steering. The steering feels smooth, just have this whine at low speed 5-10mph.

So i changed the power steering fluid, switched to ATF per owners manual, so far the whine has gone away but when my truck was on jacks i wanted to check tie rods and noticed some play when moving the wheel side to side. The play is exactly the same on both sides. There is zero play when trying to push and pull the wheel top and bottom if that makes sense. Here is the video showing the play in the tie rod.

Overall looking into what this whine would be? Also, Is that play in the tie rod normal? Im guessing not but want to check in with you more experienced members on here who have gone through this headache. Any input or advice is appreciated. Sucks i noticed this on a friday! :annoyed::bananadead:

Also if someone could let me know if my videos are working for them that would be great, not too good with the tech stuff.

That whine doesn't sound like P/S pump or hydraulic to me. Sounds like dry ball joint or something suspension related. Just put new tires on my truck and checked front end like you, mine does not have play like yours does. Either you have shot inner tie rods OR the whole rack is moving side to side, Ive heard of rack bushings taking crap but have never seen it myself

Thanks for the reply. never worked on tie rods or rack before so I was a bit stumped as to what it could be.

The movement you are experiencing is the tad bit of play that the steering wheel is moving when it's locked. The only way to check the inner is to remove the boot and watch for movement. The outer if. Ad will have movement where it bolts up if it's bad. This video should she'd some light on the subject.

Before I start another thread, I do believe I have dried ball joints however, can't seem to find torn boots on either side. Didn't want to start another thread so I'll ask here first. Any of you know a good means to lubricate the ball joints since they are sealed...and what type of grease works best?i Believe it's coming from my lca ball joints. I've read some people use grease needles but wanted to see if there are any other means out there I might be missing..

I would do just that and see if the noise stops and if so you the LBJ is the culprit. Then I would replace soon.

UPDATE. So finally had my wife come out and turn the wheel for me as i literally felt around the LCA ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar, etc to try and feel where the most vibration was coming from as i still wasn't 100% sure it was the lower ball joints. Finally checked my UCA's and definitely noticed more vibration coming from them. As my wife turned the wheel sprayed some wd-40 on the uniball and boom noise went away. Guess its time to get some replacement uniballs from camburg. Thanks again for the help...glad i got rid of this annoying ass steering noise.
