My girlfriend has a 2008 Jetta with the automatic/tiptronic transmission. The other day she was shifting through the gears using the tip mode. When she put it back in drive the shifter would just hang between drive and tip mode, now the computer is only registering that it's in tip mode and always displaying the gear shift numbers 1-6 on the display. This happens if she's in any gear other than park. I'm gonna be tearing the shifter assembly down today and seeing if i can find the problem. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance.

Its a computer controlled transmission . Next step is a scan for codes .
Possibilities are most likely the Neutral safety switch and can be confirmed with a scan tool .
I wouldnt suggest tearing the shifter apart until you scan as you could be wasting your time

Thanks! I'll scan for codes before I start. I have a feeling its something mechanically wrong with the shifter because the lever sits between D and +/-. If you push straight up to go to neutral it hits the shift bezel, you have to pull left and push up at the same time to head towards N/P

Its a cable going from the shifter down to the transmission . With that said your assumptions may be correct .
I would suggest visiting the Volkswagon Jetta forum to see if this is a re-occurring issue.
If you need adjustment specs just scream

not on the tiptronics. I've ripped them apart enough.

OP, if you are fully disassebling you have to pull the release button out to unlock it. WHEN YOU DO, and have it off. BE SURE not to let it go back in until the shifter is back on. Otherwise your shifter is now fucked and its about $400 for a new one.

That said there is a lot of other parts that share the space under there. Something could be getting stuck in the way I had the same issue years ago, when re assembling I dropped a screw down there and didnt get it out, after a while it somehow landed in the way and couldnt put it back in drive, eventually got it out tough and problem solved.

As long as the dashboard isn't showing PRNDS with all of them flashing its likely not a computer problem. Too bad you aren't near me I have VCDS could do a full scan for you otherwise.
Standard OBD2 scanners wont catch all VW faults. Usually need the full scan software from Rosstech.

The problem was a screw that got dropped during her new radio install worked its way down there after about two months. It was jamming just enough to be a nuisance. After about an hour of fiddling around I found it, since it's so dark in there. Thanks for the advice!
