2016 Trd off road paint job

Since I bought my truck in February I have more scratches on it than my 2003. Just washing the car has put scratches on it. I took it to an auto paint shop and they said there is no protective coating on it. Is anyone else having this issue? I mean it scratches if you just look at it!

 

Barcelona red. It puts scratches on the paint itself. No clear coat

 

I had a clear bra put on and the tech said my paint was some of the best he had ever seen, quality wise due to the lack of imperfections in the paint that tend to show once the clear bra is put on. I have quicksand and haven't had any scratches yet.

 

There is a lot of factors that go into this.
-Are you hand washing or using a drive-thru wash
-If you are hand washing, Do you use a clean sponge that has never been on the ground?
-What type of chemicals do you use?
-Is the vehicle waxed and polished on a regular basis?
-Do you live in an area that is prone to acid rain?
-What color is your paint (some colors like black show swirl marks a lot more than say white)
-Do you have swirls or scratches?

 

Paint shop sounds real smart. Typical as most of them dont know crap when comes to actual proper paint correction and care.
How are you washing it? what kind of towels and sponge? paint will scratch easier then you think and some colors are just softer then others. If your using something like a cotton terry bath towel I am not surprised its scratched all over already

I am willing to bet you could high speed buff all those scratches out then put a good paint sealant on it and be good to go. I used to detail cars 20 something years ago and I seen plenty scratched all to shit. If you can work a high speed buffer without burning the paint you would be surprised at the difference it makes. If you have never used one before have someone else do it so you dont f it up.

 

Agreed. My question would be, who is the bigger clown?... The body shop guy stating there is no clear coat, or the person accepting that answer for fact? If you had no clear coat and you scratched the actual paint you would see primer, not fine surface scratches.

Watch me get a two day suspension again for violating someones "safe space" with my WORDS. Last time it was for suggesting someone may need the assistance of feminine hygiene products..... god was that guy ever a whiner. Anyone here remember the 'new car smell making me sick' post? Still makes me laugh to this day and was well worth the Tacomaworld vacation i received. Just sayin'

My trucks black and I thought I was being careful when washing it. Didn't deem to matter. Got those little surface swirls everywhere. Only shoe up in the direct sun.

I contacted a detailing place and they said high speed buffer would do the trick. So I may just do that one a year.

What kind of paint sealant do you mean and is that involved in the high speed buffer process or something you would have to ask for?

I had my daily 2002 Civic painted at Maaco for $600 and didn't have a clear coat put on it. Came out just as shiny and smooth as the factory paint.

Sanded it down before I took it to them. To say the paint would be rough, I dont really believe that. Its all in the type of paint used IMO but I am not a body shop tech so I could be wrong.

 

If you pay a detailing company to run a high speed buffer after they buff it out they will apply a wax or paint sealant on it when they are done. Wax works great but doesn't last as long and needs to be reapplied a couple times a year a paint sealant will stay on much longer. You can get Something like Meguire's sealant at AutoZone and apply it yourself on down the road but they will add either a wax or sealant when they are done with the high speed buffer. I would ask them what they use and recommend after they buff it out. Those guys should know what would be best. There is a detailing thread on the forum. I'd recommend asking there. Lots of detailers on this site.

 

Actually there is a Meguires sealant on Amazon that says it will take out fine scratches and swirls. Maybe try that first yourself before paying someone to buff it out. Just go to Amazon and search Meguires Paint sealant. If I remember its only like $20 worth a shot

 

Yes Sir! Meguiar's Cleaner Wax made my paint come to life. The black paint actually looks better than when I bought it.

There is a difference between a single stage paint and base clear. Single stage doesn't technically have a clear coat. That's probably what the guy was thinking. Also that's probably what they used at Maaco for your $600 dollar paint job. Base clear is more expensive

 

Thats actually the stuff I was talking about. Meguires makes good products IMO.

 

Did a little research. I think I'm going to try swirlx and follow it up with the m21.
