255/85 R16 Owners Experience

I got a 840 otd from my local tire store haven't checked anything else yet....

 

A week ago I beat the pinch weld flat as a pancake on my truck, and reformed the fender liner with a heat gun. Did major cuts to the mud flap. Installed 1/4" Bump stop spacers.

Finally, finally! I can wheel the truck without any rubbing.

All the work for the Toyo's I've had to do...

• Moved to 4runner Limited wheels with 4.5 back spacing to solve: frame, LCA, and UCA rubbing.
  
• I had to beat the pinch weld flat with a sledge hammer,
• I had to cut back the mud flaps a lot,
• I reformed the fender liner with a heat gun to make flat (after pinch weld was beat flat)
• I also had to relocate the spare tire carrier back 1" to avoid the diff hitting the 255 spare under compression.
• I had to install 1/4" bump stop spacers to stop rubbing tops of fender well under full compression.
• Cab Mount Chop

The 255/85/R16 Toyos are the largest in their size and to make them fit was a lot more work than I bargained for. But I am glad for it. They are a really tough tire and have performed really well off road and I'm quite happy with them.

 

Your truck looks awesome!! It's worth it when the fenders are filled out!!!!

 

Any of you guys want some 265/75r16 good year wrangler tires with 90% tread and the all chrome moto metal rims for 950$ lemme know because i want to sell them soon to get new rims and tires.

 

You probably wont find much interest for 265/75s in a 255/85 thread. You would probably find better luck if you take few pics and make a FS thread.

I have got a stack of 5 toyo mt in this size sitting my my garage right now because the steel wheels don't clear the calipers .. Im waiting for the tire shop to order me some new wheels, it seems the aftermarket options are mostly 16x8 rather than 16x7 (at least in my area). Iv read this entire thread several times and feel confident I understand the dynamics at play here. I also have a set of toyo at2 in 265/75 on my stock 16" alloys that have 5k on them.
I'm wondering what you guys think, keep the 265 on the alloys and wait for the new wheels for the 255 mt, or mount the mt on the narrower stock rim and wrap my 265 around the (most likely) 8 inch aftermarket wheel.(is there really a difference in bead retention or the look of the bulge of 7"vs 8")

 

anybody in ontario canada looking for some used toyo mt 255's i've got 4 that have 11000km on them in the sudbury area that i'm thinking of selling and moving up to 37's, yes i know i know, but not on my sold tacoma, on my jk.

 

@Jiveydude has 255/85r16's on a 1st gen.

 

@rngr Just a small amount of trimming on the plastic toward the cab and bend over the pinch weld. They will rub the frame at full lock.

 

Anyone else running these? I like the size and rating on them.
Need to make sure that they are compatible with SCS Ray10s.

 

I'm hoping that I can stay off the frame using wheel spacers. What are the specs on your wheels?

So far I've been impressed by my pizza cutters. They perform well on everything I've thrown at them including mud and loose sand. In the mud and sand I've noticed I have really good steering authority. If I am in a rut and choose to steer out of it, the tires just cut through and right out. Same thing crossing ruts, they don't try to steer into an established rut, they go where I tell them to. On the highway, I picked up about 2mpg and for an M/T they're fairly quiet. Being 10 ply, they are a stiffer tire and you will notice potholes hit a bit harder.

I would also like to add that I did get a defective tire from BFG. The tread began to separate from the belts after only 5000 miles. Pressing on the bulge pictured was like pressing on a soft loaf of bread. Just wanted to share that for anyone else running these tires to keep an eye out for.

 

Ordered some Cooper St Maxxs from Discount Tires, however, after three days they inform me that the coopers are back ordered until next year. They said they could overnight some BFG's, so I just did that. Great looking tire, not as noisy as I expected them to be with the aggressive tread pattern.

 

Almost ordered some 285/75r16's last night. This thread brought me back to my senses. Thanks guys! To

Hey all. I'm going 255/80/17 on my sport and curious whose running spacers with this set up? If so, what size spacers? I haven't trimmed or chopped anything. Currently running 265/65/17. Thanks! Here's a pic of my current set up.

 

I'm running 1st gen rims. No spacers. I have a bit of rub on the odd bump/turn. I am running a sway bar and the OME 886 (heavy coils). Offroad, going slow, I haven't heard any rub. If you really compress the suspension you will rub. Some odd plastic trimming but not severe cutting. Crom posted a few pages back about what he had to dO
