The one I did for the Scout decades ago does NOT have a bushing. Just a bolt through the end of the tubing and that's it. It has held up fairly well for what it is, some slop has developed.
It's also just a 5/8" bolt.

By going bigger and adding the bushing on this one it made the whole swing arm much more solid.

I had to add a gate latch and rubber bumper to the Scout swing out to hold it firm when driving.

This one is really quite stout on it's own just with the latch.

 

I needed a place to set my beer.
So I made a table.


Just happens to fit the stove pretty well too.

 

How does it stay shut? Pretty nifty!

 

That hand clamp for now. And parachute cord to support it. Keeps it rattle free and easy to adjust.

 

Ohhh gotcha...I need a damn rear bumper. Weren't you tired of staring at it all day, its so ugly...I'm sick of it! But looks good, good job

 

nah dude, your truck looks really sharp! I'd rather follow a 1st gen over a 2nd gen anyway.

Awesome build man, gives me inspiration to give making a swing out carrier a shot.

 

Since the addition of the swing out, I have developed a gnarly case of wheel/bed hop from the rear at speeds over 60 mph. Like the frame is flexing, no surprise there.
I already have the frame plate mod and this was a huge improvement.
So hoping that it's just the poor shock design coupled with one shock that is actually blown.
I relocated them today.


2" square tubing, 11 gauge. 11 gauge plate welded to the frame.
If I had it to do over I would have used round tubing, but I had the square on hand and made it work. It's at an angle to make the mounting surface easier to work with.

top mounts are 11" from the inside of the frame if anybody wants to know.

This is ride height, notice the bumpstop travel compared to the shock travel.
I still need a set of bumps, they will be ordered next.

For the driver side, I had to reverse the U-bolt plate so the factory shock mount was out of the way. I did think about just cutting it off, but decided to maintain the factory strength for now. I eventually want the U-bolt flip kit. I also want to maybe redo the axle shock mount, I wasn't 100% pleased with how they looked but maybe they will be okay.

I got them as high as practical and still be able to remove/replace them without fighting with the bottom of the bed.


I took a short drive and got her up to 75mph and it was smooth as silk. Taking it wheeling later to see how that works out. I'll try to get some flex pics.

 

Now, as for the shocks themselves...
lol, they are no-name old school 70/30 emulsion shocks with a 2 1/2" dia. body and 12 1/2" stroke. 30" fully extended. They are much softer than the Rancho 7100's that were on there.
At full droop they sit at 28" extended so i have some room for force flex.

I bought them as mock up shocks, they cost me $25.00 each.
and they actually ride pretty darn good. Not as nice as King's or the other high zoot offerings but will be fine for now. I just wanted the hop to go away and I achieved that.

Anyways, I didn't end up needing spacers, but I was just going to buy a sheet of UHMW and cut my own with a hole saw. The ones from Wheeler's are way overpriced.

 

I found it interesting that a package from Oregon made it here before a package from Red Feather Lakes, which is only 40 minutes away. Both ordered the same day and time.

As for spacers, if any are needed for the pad to make contact, I'll just bolt on an appropriately sized something (scrap metal) to the frame pad to make it work.

 

Keep in mind the bumps will compress down to like 1/2 of their free height. Are the necessary to stop bottoming out on your new shock setup, or are you just trying to soften up the hard hits so you can keep up?
