I on average was my truck once every 2 months. Its not my primary vehicle. Its a 2013 with 30900 miles on it.

When I was getting gas last week I noticed just how sticky my gas door was getting so I ordered some dry teflon spray for it and planned to take care of it when I washed it on Sunday.

Well between getting gas and yesterday, I noticed rust developing on the body itself, not the fuel door.

Will I have any issue getting this fixed by the dealer?

I have a sticky fuel door as well. I will have to check but I think I might be getting some rust on the hinges area of my door. Damn east coast is not so friendly. From what I understand if you paid for the extra coverage warranty, then it looks like you might be covered for 60 months on the vehicle whether you bought it new or used and it should cover the replacement of corrosion related parts. I wonder though with your location if they would have to replace the bedside in your case? If so, that could be a little interesting as I don't know if they would have the graphics and stuff anymore to give you a new "Baja" bedside.

This is the article I was reading about that might be pertinent to this.

So far I think its just the beginning of surface rust. My neighbor pointed out theres no seam sealer there like on the other side of the cap area.

This is what Ive found online from Toyota:

I wonder if they might use "salt" as a way to get out of helping you out. Considering our roads get blasted a lot with salt it wouldn't surprise me. I guess next step is to go by Toyota and see what they say. Im sure depending on who you ask it could probably go either way about getting it take care of under warranty. Would be curious to see what results you get about it.

If it's just surface rust this product will kill it. I used it to kill numerous spots on an FJ40. The rust will turn purple after the conversion and needs to be protected with a topcoat of paint. We used this product in bulk in South Louisiana on river structures with an epoxy topcoat. It was the longest lasting solution we had for this continually wet environment.

Def good to know. I need to check my ride again and see if I might have the same issue.

That doesn't meet the criteria for Toyota Warranty.

Corrosion Perforation Warranty This warranty covers repair or replacement of any original body panel that develops perforation from corrosion (rust-through).

The reason for the rust is the door has scraped the paint exposing the bare metal.

Incorrect. The door does not touch in that entire area. The rust is developing at the seem between the sheet metal of the bed and the gas tank surround. That black line that you see that may look like damage from contact, is the paint cracking away from the seam.

Don't understand the definition of Perforation?

    per·fo·ra·tion
    ˌpərfəˈrāSH(ə)n/
    noun
    noun: perforation; plural noun: perforations
a hole made by boring or piercing; an aperture passing through or into something.
"the perforations allow water to enter the well"
    • a small hole or row of small holes punched in a sheet of paper, e.g., of postage stamps, so that a part can be torn off easily.
    • the action or state of perforating or being perforated.

Is there a hole in the sheet metal?

They may cover it, but sticking to the guidelines of what the warranty states they do not have to. I wish you the best, but it is better to go in armed with the cold hard facts rather than a false sense of being right.

    As per Toyota Web Site:

Rust-Through Coverage: 60 months/unlimited miles (corrosion perforation of sheet metal).

That's just normal wear & tear dude!....
Toyota has thin paint... I recommend caulk or 5000 marine
My 1990 Corolla had the same thing... Never got worse and wax sealer will wipe it away... You could use touch up paint or white enamel nail polish.

There is water droplets on the inside of your fuel door in this particular photo you posted.
    Typical condensation in morning humidity.
Those water droplets are contributing to your issue.

Well I spoke with Toyota. They said it was caused by "water contaminating a joint of the vehicle. Once the rust has eaten through the body it can been seen as a warranty claim." I was told if it was a flat body panel, take the hood, and rust was bubbling under the paint, they could warranty that, but seeing this is a junction of two body panels the same warranty does not imply and it must be eaten through. "Basically if I cant stick my pen though it, I cant warranty it."

They also pointed out that there was no seam sealer there and I should probably get it fixed to avoid headache down the road. They quoted me $480 to seal the rust and touch up the area and "add the seam sealer."

So they are admitting the area was not sealed properly, and to deal with it myself. Lousy service and very disappointing they wont cover developing rust, from cracked paint, and a improperly sealed seam.

I cant see it being normal wear and tear. My wife's 2006 Corolla has no body rust on it, and it has 180k miles. Our 2007 Tundra has no rust on it and it had 100,000 miles. My 2013 Tacoma with 30k miles has paint cracking and rusting....

Don't confuse yourself. You spoke to a dealer. A privately owned and operated business.

If you want to see what Toyota says, go to corporate. Otherwise.. be realistic.

Don't expect a "comprehensive" fix if Toyota agrees to cover it under the corrosion warranty. Dealer will likely squirt some paint in the local area and call it a day (enough to tide you over until the warranty expires).

Like I said it is a corrosion perforation warranty.

Bubbling paint would not fall under that either as that falls under the regular 36/36 warranty.

You could fix this yourself for 25 dollars and a little time.
