My 2015 Tacoma Double Cab Stereo Install

Spent a few days this week installing a new system in my 2015 Tacoma Double cab


Components are:

UPDATED 02/01/17: I ended up replacing the Factory HU with a Kenwood DDX-9903S

 

Doing the same thing in the same truck this weekend... sound deadener all over, all new speaker wire, door speakers, amp, 10" sub. I have no idea what to anticipate. How many hours do you think you've got invested in your install?

 

Total, i have around 24 hours into the install. I really took my time and made sure that i was doing everything right the first time, and i was doing it all solo.

ran into a slight issue getting the wire into the passenger side front door, but the others were all fairly easy to work with.

 

Shit man, not what I wanted to hear. Was hoping to wrap it up in one long 12-16 hr. day. I guess it'll just have to be two days then! Thanks for the input, hope you're enjoying your stereo!

 

I took last monday off hoping to get mine done as well, and after 14 hours in the garage... i wasn't where i had hoped to be as well.

 

Nice setup! How do you like that sub? I am about to install the same sub in my truck and I'm curious how the low end bass is and how hard it hits. I was apprehensive about a shallow mount sub since I've never had one before. Thanks

 

my first shallow sub as well, and i really like it. I'm putting 300W RMS at it, and its hard hitting.

I listen mostly to metal, and its keeps up nicely to fast double bass. I threw some "old school" bass CD's(from the early 90's) in and the low end is awesome!

for the record, i highly recommend Stinger Speedwire for any tacoma upgrades, since the majority of them will be keeping the factory HU

I bought a Stinger Amp power kit, comes with their power, ground, fuse holder, and remote wire. All in their 6000 series wire.

 

the speedwire is for the speaker leads, all 4 channels and amp turn on lead. I used it to run the high level signal to my Amp from the factory head unit

 

That's nice, keeps the install clean. I'm replacing the stock head unit with a Pioneer since the JBL system is such a pain in the ass to deal with it just makes things easier to replace it all for me. Thanks for all the info!

 

Took me 23.5 hrs. Began at 5:30 Thursday night, finished Friday night at 11:00. Will never attempt to do that again, especially in such a short period of time.

 

Yessir, easy to put in 20+ hours on it! so far i have taken the sub out a few times to reseal it, and pack the box with stuffing. made a huge difference

 

Just curious - did you cut the backs out of the foam baffles or leave them sealed?

Originally i left them sealed, but it sounded horrible! so i ended up cutting the backs out of them. just took about half off the back, so water stays off the speakers

 

Probably a wise move. However I did discover they can be useful in some circumstances. With cheap speakers that don't really handle midbass well anyway, and lower power, they can improve FR and distortion profiles. Think OEM setups here.

This is a cheap pair of NVX VSP 525 woofers with and without a complete 'sealed' baffle. 3 sweeps each channel & averaged.

Blue = No Baffle
Red = Baffle Installed



Pretty dramatic difference huh? It also allowed me to play them much louder as it kept the cone from moving very far and distorting as much. Those 2 big dips are part of my cabin's transfer function and difficult to work with and still kinda exist even with lots of work.
