I've drilled my bed at least 50 holes. On the floor and the wall. If you're interested in the space between the bed and cab, you can safely have 1" protrusion back there no problem. Got pics in my build thread of some rivnuts i pulled back there.

Actually I am interested in the space between the bed and the fender and whether there is anything between. I want to install a board on each side on which I will put quick fist and other brackets to hold shovels, axes, extinguisers, camping tables and chairs and whatever else.

I don't want it to be screwed only at the top, I want the bottom to be bolted too.

There is a ton of room there, should have no issues.

I'm greatful for this thread. I bought 3/8 and 1/4 inch spring nuts and other hardware to to make some anchor points and brackets for tools. My truck only had d rings installed near the tailgate and no other places to tie down other than the T track that came with no accessories and glad this thread listed hardware that will work to make the tie downs I need!

Awesome thread! I'm a new member here on TW. I just bought a 2010 Tacoma SR5 last week and was looking for a thread like this. Over Labor Day weekend, my brother and I are going to weld up a removable canoe carrier that will fit in the bed and I was researching how to make DIY attachment points. It's all here (and more). Good stuff.

For anyone looking for an alternative to the t slot nuts for the bed rail, Lowes has spring nuts in the electrical isle. They had 3/8" ones that I got and they fit in the bed rail well, they do not rotate after putting them in, they just snap in as is, I will post a pic. $4 or something for 5 of em . And you don't have to slide them in from the end of the rail.... I'm building a hi lift mount and shovel/axe/fire extinguisher mounts.

It took me forever to find them and nobody that worked at the store had ever seen them before apparently.

We use a smaller version of these at work (I wish we had the bigger ones). They are really designed to be used the other way around (spring on the back side to hold it in place) but not sure if there is enough clearance behind the nut when spring is compressed. I checked our local Lowes stock and they don't have any...the closest Lowes that has them is about 50 miles away. I think I'll see if my local one will order a few packages and try them.

Thanks for the stock number.

EDIT: Just found that Home Depot carries them too and my local one has three different sizes in stock.

Seems to me you could clip off about half of the spring and it would clear. :hattip:

I ended up clipping the springs but I was using them to help insert, also my bolts are a few threads short so it's tough to get them started, but it works

    Seems like a good find.
Question, though: if they're fairly easy to insert, do you think they will stay put well under load and vibration?

I've had them holding a hi lift, shovel, axe and fire extinguisher for a few months and even some rough off road and they've been just fine

That's awesome! I've been wanting something like that for years!

I'm currently still using the same hardware pictured below. The eyebolts are 3/8-16 thread, so those spring nuts should work great!

I'll try and pick some up soon!

    Thanks!

Can't believe there aren't more things out there. I'm needing to mount some quick fists. And would be awesome if there were a small tool box that mounted to the rails.

You can make your own. I did. A t nut, the right length bolt and simply widen the hole in the back of the quick fist. Easy peezy and under $2.
