I figure I can both check if it's over or under filled, if it's properly filled then I should be able to feel it with my fingertip when reaching into the fill plug right?

If the fluid level is fine then I'm betting it has to do with the way the shifter was improperly re-assembled after the clutch was installed, and I'm getting normal heat from the transmission working its way up the stickshift assembly. Hoping that's the case anyhow, as that outcome would mean there'd be nothing urgently wrong.

Manual transmission oil level can be checked with the transmission cold. If you check it when it's hot some oil may come out as it expands. I know of no reason the shift lever should get hot. Synthetic oil should run cooler. I use AmsOil in my transmission the shift lever doesn't get hot. I don't know what could be causing your's to get hot but it's not normal.

On flat ground I personally fill mine until it flows out, then I quickly cap it. As long as it's very close to the hole, you're good.

The fill bolt is a 24mm if I remember correctly and I believe it's on the drivers side of the tranny.

Fill is on the drivers side, and the drain plug is on the passenger side a bit lower right?

Just want to be 100% sure I'm undoing the right one

Make sure to remove the fill plug first!

I did. I only needed to remove that one because I wanted to see if it was over or under filled.

I removed the fill plug on a level street surface, truck was at operating temp according to the gauge but had been sitting for over an hour. The fluid was really warm but not too hot to touch. After I removed the fill plug, a steady stream of fluid came out for a couple seconds, then sort of drizzled out for about 20 more seconds. All in all, maybe a half a cup of fluid came out of the fill plug when I opened it.

So maybe it was a little over full but I doubt that was enough to make it heat up my shifter like it has been, I've been reading on here and elsewhere that people intentionally overfill theirs by at least that much. So I think I can cross off over/under filled from the list, fluid doesn't seem to be the issue so I'm betting it has something to do with the stick shift assembly being put back together incorrectly. I should mention that the shop was in a hurry to get it put back together because they were past closing time when I went to pick up my truck that day, so it wouldn't surprise me if that's what happened. Will hopefully find out tomorrow when I take it back to the shop, thanks for everyone's help and input thus far!

Interested in seeing what the solution will be. Good luck man.

Shop just called me and said they checked the fluid and it was fine (already knew that from checking it myself last night), and he took the stick shift assembly apart to make sure everything was good and according to him, it was. So...I don't know where to turn now. This morning on my freeway drive to work it got lukewarm but not hot, so I suppose maybe it's possible that letting out that 1/2 cup of fluid last night did the trick? :notsure: I have another freeway drive this afternoon after I pick it up so we'll see.

Is this something I can check on my own? Sorry I'm not very familiar with it
